» It's Children's Day tomorrow -- a tired-out day for parents who have to take their overexcited kids to see tanks, the PM's chair and caged animals in the zoo. Why not try something new this year? We know a place where the entire family can have fun while getting their stomach filled at the same time.

Fan Day marks a new day

Life, Melalin Mahavongtrakul, Published on 02/09/2016

» A new romantic drama from Thailand, Fan Gun Khae Wan Diaw (Fan Day), hits screens this week. That means there won't be much else for cinema-goers to choose from, since no other Hollywood blockbusters or Thai movies are willing to go in direct competition with director Banjong Pisanthanakun's latest creation. His previous movie -- the comedic retelling of old folklore Pee Mak Phra Khanong -- made history by reaching 1 billion baht at the box office in 2013, something we're unlikely to see again in a long, long time.

The last picture show?

Life, Melalin Mahavongtrakul, Published on 11/05/2016

» The Scala Theatre on Siam Square Soi 1 has long been a place of fond memories for Thai cinemagoers. The sight of the staff in yellow jackets, cheap popcorn and the grand chandelier hanging above the staircase are just some of the many charms of this stand-alone cinema in the heart of Bangkok. He said it’s the purity in architecture that drew him to such a sight.

Chiang Mai by design

Life, Melalin Mahavongtrakul, Published on 15/12/2014

» At the mention of the northern province of Chiang Mai, most people think of a tourist hub filled with temples, coffee shops and a long walking street for shoppers. But deep inside, hiding around corners and turns are pieces of local art and design — both contemporary and traditional. To highlight and showcase these hidden works by local artists and craftsmen, as well as mobilising the creative industry to promote tourism, the Thailand Creative and Design Centre (TCDC) recently piloted its first Chiang Mai Design Week.

Special needs, special tactics

» Way down a soi in the Lad Phrao area, a blue house with a red gate set into a brick wall painted white has a most welcoming feel to it when I drop by one sunny day. Inside, there is a small grassy area with a covered sandpit. Children's bicycles are piled in one corner and a vegetable garden can be seen at the back of the property. This is MA Home Play, a cosy refuge on Soi Nak Niwat 48 which caters to children battling autism and other learning disabilities.
