» All those who have criticised the comments by US envoy Daniel Russel during his visit to Thailand should read Songkran Grachangnetara’s article, “Only real democracy will solve Thailand’s problems” on Thursday. It’s the most powerful he has written so far. The article clearly illustrates Mr Songkran’s anguish at the current plight of his country, and his concerns for the future will be shared by many of Thailand’s friends abroad.

» I was so pleased to see the government and law enforcement officers taking human trafficking seriously (BP, Jan 13). Does this mean they will arrest the several criminal gangs and hundreds of Uzbekistan and Eastern European prostitutes that work every night in the Sukhumvit Soi 3 and Soi 4 area?

» If you've spent a lot of time in Bangkok, there are some sights that probably don't faze you anymore. Street vendors selling fried insects, ladyboys that are prettier than actual women, traffic jams stretching as far as the eye can see, people putting ice cubes in their beer/wine, multiple 7-Eleven stores in every soi, selfies being snapped in public restrooms…

» Your Dec 3 report on the Aetas building is well put and you make the important point that this should be a warning for future developers. However, you fail to make another point which is whether or not this should lead to action against other offending buildings. I can think of several within a short distance of where I stay in Sukhumvit Soi 39 including one that is currently under construction. The sois around here are certainly less than 10m wide in places and there are several huge condos and apartment buildings. There is a very valid reason for the 10m rule. Small streets cannot cater for the large volumes of traffic created by these big residences. As an urban planner it annoys me to see the apparent disregard for the normal rules of development control.

» Last weekend, I participated in my first run. I don't mean the kind of manic movements I exhibit when there's a rabid soi dog chasing me, or when I hear the jingle of a Wall's ice cream truck coming down the street.

» 1. Why do cashiers at convenience stores offer you a plastic bag even when you’re just purchasing a pack of gum? Do they have a quota of plastic bags they must give away in a day to fill?
