By lens, stage and paint, truth

» In 2009, Tanwarin Sukkhapisit made I'm Fine Sabai Dee Ka, a three-minute satirical film/performance art piece in which she locks herself in a cage placed in front of the Democracy Monument. Passers-by (both actors and unsuspecting pedestrians) take photographs and stop to ask her what happened. She smiles and repeats the same answer: "I'm fine in here." Tanwarin, who once served as the president of the Thai Film Director Association, is a prolific filmmaker who has made independent and mainstream films. In 2010, her low-budget production, Insects In The Backyard, made headlines when it became the first film to be banned under the 2006 Film Act (censors said the film depicted inappropriate images of student prostitutes and a penis).

» Why would someone steal the world's rarest water lily? That was the question asked by Sam Knight in an article published in the British newspaper The Guardian recently. He wrote the lengthy article after the smallest water lily in the world, the Nymphaea thermarum, whose white flowers measure less than 1cm across, was stolen from — of all places — the Princess of Wales Conservatory in the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in London.

More than 100 stages and street shows were inspired by history, pop culture, social situations and used traditional forms of puppetry as well as influences of other performing arts such as circus. Many shows brought smiles, laughter and tears, and many were thought-provoking.

An evening to treasure

B Magazine, Usnisa Sukhsvasti, Published on 23/11/2014

» 'Jewellery treasures" was the dress code for the glittering 50th anniversary celebration of Beauty Gems. Though most people were stumped as to how to dress for such a theme, they hardly hesitated in bringing on the bling, with enough jewellery to make a sultan's turban droop.

» It isn't necessary to go to a beach town and eat only seafood, especially when you opt for a vacation on Koh Samui. The famed island so popular with Europeans has many five-star hotel dining options, on top of stalls selling yen tah foh (noodles in pink, tofu-based soup) with lobster and shophouses offering American steaks and Italian gelato.

Mind over manners

B Magazine, Michael Ruffles, Published on 23/11/2014

» From time to time, the Land of Smiles seems like it's anything but. It becomes the land of smirks when you're waiting for change and the motorcycle taxi rider insists he doesn't have enough. It becomes the land of scowls when you suggest to a middle-aged woman with the khunying hairdo that she wait her turn at the 7-Eleven counter. It becomes the land of blank stares when you point out to the smartphone zombies that they shouldn't block the door of the skytrain.
