Everything's coming up mangos

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 25/05/2018

» It's mango season at Big Mango and for diehard fans, there is possibly no better time to be alive. Currently ongoing at Le Meridien Bangkok, one can immerse oneself in mango mania this summer with a pairing of mango-themed afternoon tea and massage. Priced at 1,500 baht for a Mango Inspirations Afternoon tea set and a 45-minute mango oil body massage for two, Mango Mystique is one of the sweetest deals we've seen on the tea circuit -- since that price alone usually just gets you one tea set (for the tea set alone the price is 800 baht).

An illustrative fairy tale

» The Starbucks at Wang Burapha is bland and uninteresting, but it was not a lost cause to stop for a chit-chat there, as it was the very place that Phannapast "Yoon" Taychamaythakool had sat down to draw her fanciful and otherworldly animals for Gucci. Phannapast's vibrant illustrations of animals wearing Gucci's cruise collection, which she uploaded on Instagram, caught the attention of Gucci's creative director Alessandro Michele, and that led to her becoming one of the brand's featured artists last year.

The wonder of Oz at Thong Lor Art Space

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 11/08/2016

» Everybody knows about Dorothy Gale and her adventures in Oz, but L. Frank Baum also has a bevy of other characters just as endearing and unique as the little girl who got tornadoed into the magical land away from her home in Kansas. If you've never heard of Tik-Tok before, Thong Lor Art Space offers you the chance to get up real close to what is possibly the world's first robot character portrayed in literature in The Adventures Of Tik-Tok, Man Of Oz this month. The first half will recount the adventures of the Wizard of Oz and Dorothy, before heading towards the land of Ev, where the "mechanical man" who was forgotten in a cave is later found by Dorothy.

None but the brave

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 21/10/2013

» Like any perfectly-toned and seasoned diver, American athlete David Colturi glibly leaps off the 10-metre platform at Hua Mak swimming pool to execute a couple of somersaults before slicing into the water with a slick barani. He jumps off the high platform as easily as if it were only one metre like any other US national champion can, but the main difference is that he enters the water feet first. To do so is to go against every natural instinct and reflex a normal diver has ever known, as well as to defy all lessons taught and what the muscles have been trained _ and want _ to do. Albeit lesser known, the ability to enter the water feet first effortlessly with such an experienced sleekness is a signifying mark that this is also a cliff diver we're looking at.

» Setting out to be Southeast Asia's largest showcase of the world's finest jewellery and gems fair, the Singapore Jewellery and Gem Fair is the sister _ but hardly the complement _ to the world's ultimate and most established fine jewellery event: the Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair, which is held in September and organised by UBM. Making its debut appearance at the Sands Expo & Convention Centre from Oct 12-15, the fair has established itself as an exemplary contender likely to emerge as the next top ruler of Asean's fine jewellery exhibition.

What's new, pussycat?

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 25/01/2013

» If you haven't been living under a rock for the past two months, we're pretty sure you must have come across, or heard about the newest cat cafe in town: Purr Cat Cafe Club. We're sure this concept cafe is nothing obscure to ailurophiles, but for those who exhibit indifference to these curious creatures, a cat cafe is one where the shop's kitties are free to walk wherever they want.

Rendered speechless

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 17/10/2012

» The name Nipan Oranniwesna should ring a bell for those who prefer art that doesn't necessarily look like art as we know it. By that thinking, you will be greeted by mundane everyday objects: wooden planks, rice or whatever that is so easy to dismiss.
