An ocean at the top of the world

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 18/07/2019

» The wooden sign at the highest point of Phu Ta Jo claims that the mountain rises 1,300m above sea level. According to my topographic map, and judging by the vegetation, the elevation was actually more like 800-900m. But that didn't really matter, I was still on top of the world.

Vietnam's up and coming destinations

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 14/03/2019

» Unlike Hanoi, Sapa, Danang, Hue, Hoi An, Dalat, Mui Ne and Ho Chi Minh City, Nha Trang (pronounced ya jang) is not a familiar name for Thai travellers. But with a direct air link between Bangkok and this Vietnamese city, recently introduced by Bangkok Airways and soon to be followed suit by another airline, that is about to change.

Rugged riders

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 16/02/2017

» The legendary Pong Din Dam trail has long been on my must-go-ride list, so long that I almost forgot about it. Recently, however, after finding time to review the long list (yes, I actually have it on my computer) I decided it's time to cross this one off.

» Hua Hin's Khao Hin Lek Fai is currently a mountain biking hot spot. Last week, the hill played host to round three of the Thailand Enduro Series. Next month it will be the venue of the final race of the Thailand Gravity Series. But this district of Prachuap Khiri Khan has more to offer than downhill tracks. There's also a new cross-country trail that is worth checking out.

Rocking and rolling

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 01/09/2016

» Quite a while ago on my first visit to the Hin Chang Si lookout point in Khon Kaen, I promised myself I would come back on a bike. The mountain road was not too long or too steep for me to climb and the magnificent vista of the reservoir of Ubolratana Dam down below would definitely be a sweet reward.

Backpedalling

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 25/02/2016

» A couple of weeks ago as I was reorganising my hard drive, I hit on picture folders that contain photos from trips to Khao Fah Lap. Dating back to 2006, they made me realise that it had been quite a while already that I haven't been to those mountains of Lop Buri province virtually unknown to most people but regarded with legendary status among hard-core off-road drivers. It's been 10 years!

Plenty of cycling in 2016

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 31/12/2015

» After six months or so of closure, the revamped cycling track around Suvarnabhumi International Airport was officially reopened last Saturday. Renamed the "Sky Lane", this collaboration between the Airport of Thailand (AOT) and Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) has been greatly welcomed by Bangkok's cycling community. The return of this bike track to the short list of places where residents of the capital can train or enjoy leisurely rides without the risk of becoming roadkill is definitely one of this year's best bit of good news.
