Thailand: Great destination for filming

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 26/03/2015

» Three centuries before the birth of Christ, Alexander the Great of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedonia launched a successful military campaign to expand his power eastward, conquering Egypt, Babylonia, Persia and many more along the way as well as beyond. In Thailand's northeastern province of Ubon Ratchathani, at a site next to the Moon River, his name still prevails. There, you can also find Macedonian-style armour and weapons, actually an entire military camp, on display.

Nok-ing on Krabi's door

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 19/03/2015

» Unlike most urban areas in the Kingdom, the 143-year-old town of Krabi was not built on flat ground. It's one of the places I've long wanted to explore on two wheels, but have never actually been able to do. The idea of spending an entire tiring day on the long, straight stretches of the southbound Phet Kasem Highway always dampens my enthusiasm. So when a friend at Nok Air recently asked if I would like to join a bike event the airline was organising in Krabi, I did not hesitate to say yes.

Pushing onward, literally

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 17/07/2014

» Mountain bikers in Chon Buri and Rayong are definitely among the happiest cyclists in Thailand. With the many single tracks available in the two eastern provinces, bikers there do not have to ride the same trails every week, as is often the case in other parts of the country.

Bike back in time

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 05/06/2014

» For many travellers, Wiang Sa, a town 23km south of the provincial capital in Nan, is a must. One of the things that lures them there is bicycles — vintage bicycles, to be exact.

Seeking the 'Venice of the East'

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 02/01/2014

» It's 2014 now and for sure a lot of people no longer find it easy to picture Bangkok as the "Venice of the East". However, it is not impossible to actually get a glimpse of what life in the capital was like back then when khlongs, the Thai word for canals, were everywhere. Trust me you don't need a time machine for that. All you need is a bicycle.

Come fly with me

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 05/09/2013

» Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the two adjacent eastern provinces of Rayong and Chon Buri have more purpose-built mountain bike tracks than any other part of the country. And just a couple of weeks ago Rayong introduced another one.

Field of dreams

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 15/08/2013

» Ever since it was mentioned in a popular song by the late singing legend Suraphol Sombatcharoen decades ago, Suphan Buri's Suan Taeng has been familiar name for Thais. Strangely though, people in other provinces know little about the tambon which is part of Suphan Buri's Muang district, perhaps not even its location.

Dividing the straddle

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 23/05/2013

» A couple of weeks ago I wrote about an all-mountain trail from the highlands of Phu Hin Rong Kla down the mountain to Ban Huai Nam Khao south of the national park. But that wasn't the only trail I rode during the trip with the filming crew of the Sua Nong Toh TV programme. The following day, we did another route. This time it was in the northern part of the park that straddles Phitsanulok and Loei provinces.

Downhilling on the air

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 16/05/2013

» Not every sporting event gets live TV coverage. But downhill mountain biking competitions do. I'm talking about DH races in Thailand. Really.

Looping the loop (after a fashion)

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 25/04/2013

» On a recent trip I made to the North I had two "missions" in mind. One was the jaunt on Doi Inthanon which I wrote about the week before last. And the other was an epic - for me, anyway - ride from Chiang Mai to Lampang.
