To help you embrace the holiday spirit, Guru presents 12 ways to give towards charitable causes, based on four personality types. Should you decide to act on these options, we say sathu to your generosity.

Down to earth

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 17/04/2015

» Earth Day falls on Wednesday (Apr 22), but you probably haven't realised that since you're still busy trying to get the white clay from Songkran off your fingernails. Each year, Earth Day sees events organised around the world in support of environmental causes. Since we think you can do better than declining a plastic bag after shopping at 7-Eleven, this week Guru searches for ways us city-folk can go green.

The glass is half full (of wine)

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 17/04/2015

» Judging from the number of restaurants with the word "wine" in their names, it seems many Bangkokians have accepted Jesus juice into their lives. The Glass Bangkok is a new member to that sector, honouring the vessel rather than the liquid itself. Drinkers at this French bistro can get the same value for their baht whether they're guzzling wine by the glass or bottle. The centrepieces of the establishment are four high-tech dispenser machines, measuring 36 wines in 3cl, 6cl and 12cl pours. This way, you can sample from different bottles — red, white, rose or organic — without putting a dent in your wallet (prices start at B50). The floor-to-ceiling windows allow entry to an ample amount of natural light, while the high ceiling adds a spacious feel to the modern dining area. The crowd here consists of Thais, Japanese housewives and expats.

Going somewhere? Go Green

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 13/03/2015

» As an actor, Pipat “Top” Apiruktanakorn, 35, has appeared on both the small and silver screens. But since 2009 he has also played another well-known role — that of an advocate for green lifestyles, opening Ecoshop, which sells eco-friendly yet well-designed products. Last year, it was reincarnated as Ecoshop Common (G/F, Bangkok Art & Culture Centre, Rama I Road, BTS National Stadium, fb.com/ecoshopcommon.bangkok), a combined retail shop and learning centre. To further enable people to embrace their greener side, Top last week launched a smartphone application called Ecolife. Here, Top speaks with us about the app, which is in English and currently available on the App Store and Google Play.

Tech support

» Living in Bangkok comes with specific frustrations (rejections by taxi drivers, spending one-third of your life stuck in traffic, driving around crowded parking lots in search of an empty space). But don’t fret, fellow Bangkokians — thanks to advanced technology and (sketchy) 3G connections, you can solve these problems using nothing but your fingertips. Here’s our selection of apps and websites to help you navigate Bangkok with more ease.

Culinary comeback

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 15/08/2014

» Kiosk isn't exactly a new name. After almost two years of absence, Kiosk, which used to be at Thailand Creative & Design Center, has made a comeback at a new location. It shares the same precinct with other shops at The Barkyard Bangkok, a dog-centric community space that opened last month. If you think Kiosk serves grab-and-go food through a small window as suggested by the name, you'll be pleasantly surprised by its size and selection of food. Sit al fresco if you like to people- and dog-watch while eating. Opt for the indoor dining area with its masculine and rustic feel if you don't want to risk any dogs jumping on your lap to steal food off your plate. We visited after it had been open for three weeks and most of the patrons were people who live nearby.
