What's cooking, neighbour?

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 05/02/2016

» After noticing a huge pool of culinary talent hidden in Bangkok's home kitchens — and a growing demand for authentic meals — Samuel Coizet and Pakki Sampataphakdee co-founded Kinkao (www.kinkao.co), an online platform that allows home chefs to cook and sell home-made meals to the people in their neighbourhoods. From Vietnamese to Mexican to Southern Thai, you can find nearly every type of cuisine on the website. We spoke with the founders about their endeavour.

Where there's smoke...

» The set-up: If you need proof as to why Bangkok is just as deserving of the “foodie capital” title as Hong Kong and Singapore, pay Il Fumo at visit. Powerhouse trio Choti Leenutaphong, Debby Tang and chef Luca Appino, responsible for Bottega’s nostalgic comfort and exceeding our cocktail expectations at Vesper, are now making us swoon over charcoal-grilled and dry-aged beef.

» If you need proof as to why Bangkok is just as deserving of the "foodie capital" title as Hong Kong and Singapore, pay Il Fumo at visit. Powerhouse trio Choti Leenutaphong, Debby Tang and chef Luca Appino, responsible for Bottega's nostalgic comfort and exceeding our cocktail expectations at Vesper, are now making us swoon over charcoal-grilled and dry-aged beef. The restaurant has chosen to keep the original facade of a beautiful house dating back to the 1950s, in which descendants of King Rama IV resided. The interior, however, is all about subdued colours, and minimalistic, contemporary decor. Fitting, we thought, with the rather purist approach to cuisine, which is heavily focused on ingredients and cutting-edge techniques. There is a separate bar area, dimly lit, well-stocked and decked out in dark wood, reminiscent of treasured locales the likes of Bar Hemingway at The Ritz Paris and Dry Martini Bar in Barcelona.

All aboard to stomach satisfaction

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 13/03/2015

» Bangkokians love two things: Instagramming daily meals and avoiding traffic-clogged roads. So we’ve decided to combine these two passions by hopping aboard the BTS to embark on an epicurean ride. Sure, the Skytrain is often freezing cold and overcrowded, but we appreciate the fact that it’s the most efficient way to chomp through town. Use our concise guide to eateries and hang-out spots that can be accessed by BTS, which every urbanite should visit at least once to get beyond the usual Thong Lor and Silom nests.

American all-star

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 27/02/2015

» If there's one thing America gets right, it's the burgers. Thanks to the Land of Stars and Stripes, Bangkokians are now obsessed with hunting down every burger joint in town, ranking each one and calling ourselves "connoisseurs". Its name might be prosaic, but New York Style Steak & Burger (NYSSB) brings to the table authentic American cuisine in a modern and casual setting. Decked out with industrial furniture and brick walls reminiscent of an eatery in downtown Brooklyn, a hospitable staff serves up generous portions of hearty dishes, making it no surprise that some customers return weekly for their burger fix.

Find & dine

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 07/11/2014

» If there’s anything Bangkokians know a lot about, it’s shopping and eating. Now, there are places where you can actually do both (and no, we’re not talking about glitzy malls). We’ve rounded up mixed-use places where you can go to snack, and if you feel like it, browse and snap up cool finds — whether it be a designer dress, a vintage armchair or even a hipster bicycle.
