LIFE

Howling at owl

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 27/12/2013

» THE SET-UP: For those who like to relax after the nine-to-five away from soi dogs at ya dong stands or som tam vendors, there are plenty of izakayas in the city to consider. A brand new addition called 8owls is trying to stand out from the flock by offering a blend of sit-down dining and izakaya atmosphere with craft beer. The vibe is a mix of mystery and understated style in an industrial setting. You can't miss the sexy birdcage-inspired dining booths in the indoor area. However the view up there is so-so, thanks to the nearby buildings. The rooftop is geared towards Thong Lor white-collar types looking to unwind after work in style. But it comes at a price.

LIFE

Short and Sweet?

» Ain't nobody got time to type in full English anymore these days. Abbreviations can make communication more effective and fun but when a friend texts you "50% off *$ joe! come see w/ yr eyes ASAYGT", you'd probably reply with "WTF" instead of "K" (because "OK" is also way too long).

» Lakorn, popular Thai TV soap operas, are a national pastime enjoyed by many. LIFE

Siamstagram

» Despite our sketchy 3G connectivity and low-speed internet connection in general, Bangkok is among the top places when it comes to social media. According to socialbakers.com, at the time of writing Bangkok is the city with the highest number of Facebookers - almost 12.8 million users. The Czech-based firm, which provides social media analysis and stats, also ranks Thailand 13th in the world list with almost 19 million users. Moreover, given that Suvarnabhumi Airport and Siam Paragon took the top two as the most Instagrammed places in 2012 says something about how tech-literate we Thais are.

Jobs gone wrong

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 08/03/2013

» Work can be a pain in the ass (well, provided you actually have to work for a living). Not only do we have to wake up at an ungodly hour every morning, we're expected to put on pants, brave traffic and/or smelly commuters, suck up to the boss, deal with other people, and actually get stuff done on a daily basis. And on top of all that... we're expected to maintain an air of professionalism the whole way through!

LIFE

Keep Shufflin'

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 01/03/2013

» Too much of the same thing, no matter how good it is, will be eventually boring, like listening to JT's "Suit & Tie" on repeat or overloading on room decoration in LINE Play. The same can be true with restaurants too as you may often find yourself ordering the same dishes again and again.
