Plastic peril and opportunity

» Working mostly from home these days, I occasionally opt for food delivery for convenience, particularly when the weather is extremely hot. I have to admit that I'm unavoidably consuming more plastic boxes and bags, and sometimes even plastic cutlery even though I have plenty of it at home.

» Less than a century ago, most products in Asia were made mainly from natural materials, and were built to last or to biodegrade easily. People wrapped food in leaves or paper and carried it in reusable containers, returned glass milk bottles so that they could be sterilised and used again, and ate in restaurants using ceramic plates and stainless-steel cutlery.

» Jan 1 was the first day the ban on four types of plastic waste came into effect, which was in line with the cabinet resolution made in February last year. The ban is just one move under a 20-year plan between 2018-2037 called the "Roadmap on Plastic Waste Management".

» Great news for Mae Nam Chao Phraya river-lovers. Soon they will no longer have to pretend not to notice that the old girl has a bit of a beauty problem. She’s been breaking out in unsightly and polluting plastic and Styrofoam spots for too long. Worse, it all ends up in the ocean where it takes approx. 450 years to break down, impacting marine life and potentially human health.
