Dealing With A Covid-19 Side Effect

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 22/01/2021

» One side effect of the Covid-19 pandemic that you may have overlooked (besides amassing a vast collection of hand sanitisers and exposing govt inefficiency -- kapow!) is more waste, especially plastic. Inevitably, it is exacerbated by our appetite for food delivery while we're WFH during this quasi-lockdown. The first wave saw an increase of plastic waste by 60% in Bangkok due to the higher demand for food delivery as estimated by Thailand Environment Institute in May last year. Thailand Research Development Insitute also claimed that one such order can contain up to seven pieces of plastic waste (so opt-out of utensils when you order please).

» Dominic Puwasawat Chakrabongse, 27, is a true environmentalist who graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Policy degree from The London School of Economics. He is a full-time environmental activist and runs the Thai chapter of Precious Plastic in his spare time. Precious Plastic Bangkok (fb.com/PreciousPlasticBKK) is part of a global movement that enables the recycling of plastic with easy-to-build machines. Dominic started Precious Plastic Bangkok about a year ago and has held many workshops on how to "upcycle" used plastics. He tells us why plastic is too precious to be carelessly thrown away.

Cooking with a mission

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 22/12/2017

» Sustainability isn't a gimmick at Haoma restaurant (fb.com/HaomaBKK) on Sukhumvit 31. The new restaurant by Deepanker "chef DK" Khosla is tucked deep in the soi, but it's worth the effort to get there if you want to try fresh flavours that are picked out of its mini farm. Although we didn't get to do a proper review, judging from a couple of dishes we had, we wouldn't be surprised if Haoma would be in the next edition of The Michelin Guide Bangkok. We spoke to the 28-year-old chef-proprietor about his culinary journey and his green ambition.

» There's a big fat jolly guy inside every one of us ready to come out. Wait, that sounds wrong for some reason. What we mean is that you can be a giver like Santa Claus, especially during this time of year when everyone seems to be more generous than usual. But why not extend your generosity beyond your circle of friends and families to strangers too? We've found nine cool ways you can give and, at the risk of sounding like we have a soft heart, receive good karma and the joy of doing so in return.
