Nok-ing on Krabi's door

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 19/03/2015

» Unlike most urban areas in the Kingdom, the 143-year-old town of Krabi was not built on flat ground. It's one of the places I've long wanted to explore on two wheels, but have never actually been able to do. The idea of spending an entire tiring day on the long, straight stretches of the southbound Phet Kasem Highway always dampens my enthusiasm. So when a friend at Nok Air recently asked if I would like to join a bike event the airline was organising in Krabi, I did not hesitate to say yes.

Making tracks in the middle of nowhere

» As a journalist for 25 years, I've travelled to many remote parts of the Kingdom. But rarely have I found myself in a place that made me feel as if I was "in the middle of nowhere". Recently, however, such a feeling surfaced. The cause was nothing else but mountain biking.

» Ever since its inception in 2011, the annual Tour de Farm has been regarded as one of the Kingdom’s most important contests for roadies. This year it is getting even bigger. Apart from road cycling competitions (60km and 100km), the 2014 event also has good news for mountain bikers — a cross-country MTB race!

Amidst a sea of fog

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 16/10/2014

» The cool season is approaching and for many Thais it's time to plan a trip to one of those sea-of-fog sites. Of course, the most famous of such places are in the North and the Northeast where there are many big mountains. But the truth is you don't need to travel all the way to Chiang Mai, Tak or Loei for such scenery.

Happy days for pedal pushers

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 14/08/2014

» Thai cyclists have lately been enjoying a seemingly endless stream of good news. Last week, as I was writing about the three new mountain bike trails at Khao Yai Thiang in Sikhiu, Nakhon Ratchasima, I heard an exciting rumour that a new playground for bicyclists would soon open in Bangkok!

Can you endure it, baby?

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 03/07/2014

» It’s been quite a while since the enduro trend has hit the Thai mountain biking community. Except for a mini-enduro event held a couple of months ago at Club 11 Bike Club in Bang Khen, however, there has never been a real competition in the country dedicated to the discipline. That is, until this weekend.

» It’s been more than 10 years since I took up downhill mountain biking. So, despite being 46 years old, I thought the time was definitely ripe for me to once and for all get myself a place on the National Championship podium.

Welcome to the fold

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 16/01/2014

» Since the anti-Yingluck (Thaksin) regime protesters began their "Bangkok Shutdown" operation on Monday, traffic in most of the capital has been free-flowing. For the past four days the first thing I do every morning is turn on the Google Maps app on my smartphone to check what it's like on the streets. Every day and at any time of day, the roads and expressways that usually appear in yellow or red on the map depending on the degree of congestion are now delightfully green. Traffic-wise it's as if Bangkok is still in the long holidays mood.
