End of fossil fuel?

Life, Bernard Trink, Published on 20/12/2019

» I'm not a linguist. I'm not proud of it. English is my first and only language, which is not to say that it's the only language worth knowing. I studied other languages in school, but couldn't get the hang of them. Neither am I well-versed in English. I'm not being modest. I look at Webster and Oxford with a groan.

The roots of Chicha – Peru's jungle beat

Life, John Clewley, Published on 19/09/2017

» Ever since Paul Simon used the Peruvian orchestral tune El Condor Pasa in his song of the same name, the image of Andean music is one of locals playing panpipes, dressed in traditional costumes. Think also of soprano Yma Sumac and her exotica music from the 1950s.

The commons misconception

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 29/07/2016

» We spend enough time at The Commons as it is so we thought it would be worthwhile dividing our time there up a bit. Eating waffles and drinking wine after all does get a bit boring. So we did something pretty risqué. Instead of heading to Beer Cap, we decided to climb all the way to the (almost) top of The Commons. #pushingtheboatoutguys. Low and behold, we found Absolute You, another franchise of the Absolute Yoga empire that has been bending Bangkokians into all sorts of questionable positions since 2002.

Finger pickin' good

» All-female rock band The Black Nails consists of frontwoman/guitarist Pattaraporn "Synth" Saengsamang, bassist Nuengruethai "May" Issaard and drummer Malaivee "Mew" Swangpol. Even though two of them were born into very musical families (Pattaraporn's father Narongruch Saengsamang is a music producer while Malaivee is the daughter of celebrated songwriter Jackrawut Swangpol), their path to a music career has been no shortcut. They have shared a similar journey in proving themselves by entering talent searches, going to music schools and working with small labels. When the three crossed paths, they formed The Black Nails. The trio successfully passed an audition and landed a deal at rock giant Genie Records, as they released their first single Duay Dee (Going Fine) under Showroom Projekt.

» For serious cyclists, riding a custom-fitted bicycle is like wearing a perfectly tailored suit. With different bodies, flexibilities and riding styles, each rider needs their own bike set-up for optimal performance. Holding a certificate from Serotta International Cycling Institute (SICI) and Fit Institute Slow Twitch (FIST), seasoned bike fit specialist Andrew Gerking teamed up with personal trainer/triathlete Yannapon Thumapun to found Bangkokbikefitter. The duo make personalised adjustments for each individual rider -- both competitive cyclists and recreational riders -- who come to tri bike retailer Bike Zone.

» A lot of riders new to cycling come to see me for coaching and tell me that they dream of riding 100km at an organised event, but are afraid of the distance, riding in groups and hills. I recently coached and rode the Tour De Farm (TDF) with three ladies from the Cycling Plus All Stars Team; Ching Amornvatana, Hui Sure and Ueeya Worada.

The simple cyclist

Life, Published on 29/09/2015

» I was recently coaching a group in Ratchaburi, when a client asked me to look at his bike as it had a mechanical problem; he kept hearing noises and was concerned that something might be broken. It took me just a few seconds to spot that the chain needed lubricating, probably because it had spent a lot of time being ridden in the rain over the last few weeks.
