Check his credentials

» Re: "Thamanat wins PM's backing", (BP, Sept 11). As a reformist, Prime Minister Pra-yut Chan-o-cha should quickly verify Deputy Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Capt Thamanat Prompow's claims that he didn't (a) plead guilty to charges of drug trafficking in Australia and (b) didn't serve a four-year jail sentence for his crime, thus disqualifying him from office.

A glimmer of hope

News, Postbag, Published on 31/07/2019

» The delight of both Vint Chavala, "Unacceptable attitude", (PostBag, July 30), and Veera Prateepchaikul, "Politics returns to childish ways", (Opinion, July 29), over the presentation of the opposition MP from the Future Forward Party, Pita Limjaroenrat, on Thailand's agricultural sector was shared by most netizens irrespective of political colours and even Deputy Prime Minister Gen Anupong Paojinda, who could not restrain himself from praising profusely the opposition lawmaker. It was fresh air to the assembly for that 30 minutes out of the 30 hours of substandard assembly.

» There is a shortage of fresh water. It happens most years and is far from unexpected. Where is the rainmaking initiative? Maybe the government has forgotten about it in the same way that they have forgotten everyone but themselves.

Born to love noise

News, Postbag, Published on 04/06/2019

» Daniel Reid in his June 3 letter, "Kill noise monsters", is right. There is a department to deal with noise pollution. I found this office at the Bangkok City Hall about 15 or so years ago, tucked away in a corner, staffed by 10 people, all who were playing computer games when I walked in. I was there to file a noise complaint. None of the staff knew where to find the complaint forms to fill in. When a form was eventually produced, there was little enthusiasm for anyone to listen or help out. I finally went outside to find "someone in authority" to light a fire under these people. At least I got the ball rolling after a few hours that should have taken a few minutes.

The Power of one

News, Postbag, Published on 03/06/2019

» Re: "King Power wins contract bid", (BP, June 1). Is there anyone the least bit surprised that King Power has "won" another 10-year monopoly to operate the duty-free shops at Suvarnabhumi airport?
