LIFE

Silence is the enemy

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 25/11/2015

» The course of Linor Abargil's life has been shaped by two extremes -- she was raped at knifepoint at 18 and six weeks later she was crowned Miss World 1998. Her story of survival and how she got her rapist a 16-year sentence in jail has turned Abargil into a household shero in her homeland Israel, as well as a globe-trotting advocate fighting against sexual violence. The 35-year-old has spoken about it extensively, probably over a hundred times all over the world in various centres and interviews -- not that it becomes any easier each time.

Nurture your children with travel

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 05/11/2015

» Japan is such a haven for all ages. Whether your calling is food, nature, shopping or Gundam models, there's much available to feed all senses, for everyone from those who have yet to walk to the barely walking. If you've got kids, there's the obvious option of Disneyland and toy paradise Kiddie Land, but past the crown of consumerism, the Land of the Rising Sun offers a bevy of development destinations where children not only play, but also learn in the process.

Descendants of dance

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 10/09/2015

» Kenny Ortega has another hit on his hands. If there's a movie featuring dancing, then we tend to think of this acclaimed American director, producer and choreographer. Ortega is behind various cult musical phenomena that different generations of teens have grown up with, from the 1987 film Dirty Dancing, Michael Jackson's This Is It concerts, to the globally-embraced High School Musical trilogy.

An adventure with Mamuang

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 09/09/2015

» The brand new Bangkok Citycity Gallery now has Thailand's most-loved illustrated darling, Mamuang, to mark its inception in the art arena. The day Wisut Ponnimit's work will be shown full-scale in Thailand has arrived at last -- and judging by the artist's "yeah-whatever-don't-make-life-complicated" mindset, you'd better pop in to see it before the exhibition ends in early October. The opportunity to see his mango-shaped little girl -- this time in the form of a choose-your-own-adventure maze, is possibly harder than trying to find Maroon 5 tickets, thanks to Wisut's constant tsunami of work for magazines, product endorsements and countless corporations.

Chocolate and beer -- not so queer!

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 07/08/2015

» Chocolates and wine can be fine, but unbeknown to the common Thai tongue, beer and dessert can be great friends too. We've seen all sorts of pairings go hand in hand before, yet, having dessert with beer has been a long Belgian tradition according to Sisada Gajanandana, the senior brand manager of Brewberry.

Tomorrowland magic short-lived

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 22/05/2015

» Overbearing social activists, environmentalists and vegans on my Facebook newsfeed can probably instil a message more original — and even inspiring — than what this 129-minute sci-fi romp can. Tomorrowland is a dystopian flick stuck in limbo, masquerading as a wondrous flight but is, in truth, a preachy bore.

When art comes naturally

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 30/07/2014

» Things worked out perfectly for Yanawit Kunchaethong’s exhibition “Print from Paa Sa-nguan”, which features prints made with colours extracted from forest plants. After all, the 108-rai forest in Petchaburi in which he sourced his materials is owned by his family. Helping him further, knowledge and love for plants and trees have been instilled in Yanawit since he was young by his father, Sa-nguan, and mother, who even visited the forest while she was pregnant with him. His father’s name, in fact, also serves as a pun in the exhibition’s title, referring to both a conserved and the family’s forest.

All figured out

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 20/06/2014

» In with the new, but not necessarily out with the old. As the film and television production company Kantana enters its third generation, the founders’ myriad of grandchildren have begun to step into the spotlight to take over the different wings of the empire.

Radiating cuteness

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 09/10/2013

» French photographer and scholar on Japanese visual culture Claude Estebe returns to Bangkok for his third exhibition at Toot Yung Gallery, which recently moved to Ekamai Soi 2. The revamped space is clean and simple, but his close-ups of iconic Japanese robots and merchandising toys stand out against the neutral grey walls more than ever.
