Galleries' night!

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 03/02/2017

» Ditch your regular after work plans for gallery hopping this Friday night and weekend. Galleries' Night, an artistic affair that will take up your time between 5pm to late, returns on February 3 and 4. Venues on the Sathon side open their shows first on a Friday night, while those on the Sukhumvit side will wait until the next night to launch their exhibitions. After that you're free to catch anything you missed. However, we're not gonna lie and tell you that you can or should visit, all 50 or so participating galleries over such short period of time. So, here's a manageable list of 10 that we think deserve a little more attention than the others, as you plan your nightly art crawl through Bangkok this weekend.

» The Setting: Remember the Weasley's deceptively roomy accommodation for the Quidditch World Cup in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire? That was the image that popped into mind when we crossed the threshold of The Local Canteen. From its humble storefront in a pint-sized soi, you'd never imagine to find beyond the doorway, a skylit tunnel that seats nearly 70 diners.

» As a highly sought-after contemporary artist, you may have chanced upon Chris Levine's light-synthesising works in ads for global brands like Chanel, Swarovski and BMW. The British light artist now comes to us directly with some of his most iconic works -- trippy portraits of famous humans like Kate Moss, HM Queen Elizabeth II and the Dalai Lama -- for his first solo exhibition in Thailand. It's an exhibition all levels of art appreciators can surely enjoy, so we had to catch up with Chris to learn more about his fascinating style and process as well as future and hypothetical projects.

B&W

» Things in life are seldom as simple as black and white. In most cases, this little fact of life is for the better, although not any easier. Fortunately, fashion doesn't have to be one of those things. A major trend this season involves ditching the colour spectrum and going for just black and white. Here are chic ways to sport the contrasting achromatic look for every occasion.

» When we think of gourmet Japanese beef usually only two main contenders come to mind -- Kobe and Matsusaka. Conrad's KiSara, however, is one of the few Japanese dining rooms in the country investing confidence in a third candidate, Hida.

Life's a beach

» Relaxation doesn’t always mean doing nothing at a nice hotel. Boathouse by Montara, located on Phuket’s Kata beach, provides enough activities and attractions to keep you from spending your entire getaway in your hotel room. The 26-year-old property, which underwent major renovations three years ago, includes the Boathouse Resort, Boathouse Wine & Grill and the Re Ka Ta Beach Club.
