Kin salak luang the Phrae way

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 19/10/2018

» Kin salak is a tradition communities in the northern provinces observe to make merit for deceased relatives. It doesn't take place every year, so when it happens it's a big thing for the locals. At the moment, the people of Phrae are excited about their own kin salak luang (luang meaning big), set to take place soon. Of course, all are welcome to witness the grand event.

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 27/09/2018

» A picture is worth a thousand words, so they say. But sometimes even a thousand pictures cannot say enough. The photos you see on this page show some of the many beautiful houses in Phrae's old town. But, of course, there is more than meets the eye. Each house has its own story, some also played an important part in the history of the town, and even that of the Kingdom.

A picture perfect trip

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 09/08/2018

» It has been quite a while since the last time I visited Sai Thong. Recently, as I noticed that certain photographs have been used in the Bangkok Post too often, I knew it's time to return to this national park of Chaiyaphum province once again.

Rayong's wonderful wetlands

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 28/05/2015

» Glowing in the champagne-coloured rays of the late afternoon Sun and gently swaying in the breeze from the nearby sea, the fluffy inflorescences crowning the tall green grass that fill these vast yet secret "fields" of Rayong province added magic to the already mesmerising scenery. Even more amazing is the fact that this grassland, which covers a combined area of almost 487,000m², literally floats on water.

Thailand: Great destination for filming

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 26/03/2015

» Three centuries before the birth of Christ, Alexander the Great of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedonia launched a successful military campaign to expand his power eastward, conquering Egypt, Babylonia, Persia and many more along the way as well as beyond. In Thailand's northeastern province of Ubon Ratchathani, at a site next to the Moon River, his name still prevails. There, you can also find Macedonian-style armour and weapons, actually an entire military camp, on display.

The healthy truth

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 10/04/2014

» It doesn’t seem that long since we celebrated the arrival of 2014. But it’s the height of the hot season already and Songkran, the traditional Thai New Year, is set to return three days from now. I don’t think it’s just me, but it’s as if time is flying even faster these days. Without soaring temperatures and the fact that khao niao mamuang (mango and sticky rice) are now ubiquitously available, I would be easily convinced if someone told me we’re still somewhere in the beginning of the year’s first quarter.

Nakhon Si Thammarat is a place for all seasons

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 11/10/2012

» Mention Nakhon Si Thammarat and the image of the province's most revered Phra Borommathat pagoda would pop up in the mind of many Thais. That, perhaps, is followed by the famous sat duen sip ceremony, the grand event in which locals gather to make merit for their deceased relatives; nang talung shadow puppets; manorah folk performance and many more.

Resurgent Serbia

» As peace has returned to most of the Balkans, countries in the region, including those that broke off from the former Yugoslavia, are opening their doors to tourists. And Serbia, despite the unsettled conflict with Kosovo to its south, is no exception.

New fun on wheels

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 26/01/2012

» When I was little, my mother bought me a tricycle. It didn't look as cool as the bikes older boys were riding but I couldn't blame her because what she did seemed like a logical first step. After all, three wheels were evidently easier to handle and thus safer than two wheels.
