Grace, beauty from the RBSO

Life, Published on 14/04/2020

» An essential part of the life of any healthy, growing symphony orchestra are the eagerly anticipated visits of various different guest conductors, in order to provide artistic variety and to complement the ongoing work and development executed by an ensemble's incumbent music director. An example of what a positive effect this can have was provided recently at the Thailand Cultural Centre, when German conductor Golo Berg had his first collaboration with the Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra, providing expert accompaniment for Thai piano soloist Natnaree Suwanpotipra in Grieg's Piano Concerto In A Minor, and demonstrating masterly control of structure in the expansive canvas of Brahms' Symphony No.3 In F Major.

Mature Musicality

Life, Published on 25/09/2019

» Somtow Sucharitkul and Siam Sinfonietta earlier this month gave a wonderful concert in the Czech Republic's capital, Prague, as part of their European tour. The event was significant for several reasons. It marked the premiere on the Old Continent of Voraprach Wongsathapornpat's piece Temples Of Kyoto, Trisdee Na Patalung's Restoration, and Somtow's Helena Citrónová suite. For many of the young musicians, the tour occasioned their first performance in Europe and "their first time encountering the particular warmth of the Czechs and the intensity of their love for music". The excited audience at Prague's Academy of Performing Arts (HAMU) bestowed a long standing ovation on Somtow and Sinfonietta for their mature musicality.

Glistening with gusto

Life, Published on 18/06/2019

» Invariably energetic on the podium, the inspirational Japanese conductor Hide Shindori has made annual visits to direct the Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra for quite a few years now, so that returning audiences know exactly what to expect from the podium when he is at the helm. He has a wonderful way with the Classical period masters in particular, and the recent "Italian Festival In Thailand 2019" concert in the small hall of the Thailand Cultural Centre featured joyous, highly listenable works by Josef Haydn, Ignaz Malzat and Mozart which positively glistened with gusto from beginning to end.
