» Just got back from watching the latest Bond film, Skyfall, and most enjoyable it was too. The last time I saw James Bond in action he was helping Queen Elizabeth II parachute into the Olympic stadium in London. Fortunately this time around he bypasses Buckingham Palace and the royal corgis and he's back to his day job of saving the world, or rather MI6, from a particularly weird villain.

» When Barack Obama won the US presidential election four years ago, the BBC commented that when he took over from George W Bush _ a few months later he would be inheriting ''the in-tray from Hell''. It wasn't far off the mark. Certainly things haven't been a barrel of laughs for Mr President. But he can't complain: After all, he wanted the job.

» Considering how depressing the world news has been lately, watching snippets of the diamond jubilee celebrations of Queen Elizabeth II earlier this week was a refreshing break. It was simply good to see lots of Brits looking happy and not whining about things as is usually the case.

» Songkran appears to have been going on for even longer than usual this year. There's an awful lot of city folks who disappeared a week ago for a ''long weekend'' and haven't been seen since. They probably won't be spotted again until the end of the week, which no doubt will be just in time for another long weekend.

» At my age, any new sensation tends to be an ache or a pain, but this year on New Year's Day, I was up and about at six in the morning, which was definitely a new experience. I hasten to add this wasn't because I hadn't made it to bed after a night's revelry. Admittedly in the past there have been occasions when I've seen dawn rise on Jan 1 before hitting the sack. But this was a genuine early rise and shine occasion. Some explanation is needed for this unnatural behaviour.
