Siam Square's night of the living dead

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 31/03/2017

» Siam Square needs no introduction. With a history dating back to the 1970s, the shopping district remains the prime meeting spot for today's Bangkok youth, with plenty of shops, restaurants and a building literally made of tutoring schools. It's not the kind of place you'd expect to associate with a horror film, which is exactly what makes Siam Square, the directorial-debut of Pairat Kumwan, so interesting.

Celebrating two decades of music

» Most 90s-kids idolise Moderndog, the long-standing band lauded as the forefathers of alternative rock in Thailand. Known for their jumpy, energetic music as much as their unconventional uses of sounds and lyrical style, the three-piece outfit revolutionised the Thai rock scene when they released their first album in 1994.

Putting financial catastrophe on display

» Can you imagine, Thailand's economy was once recognised by World Bank as the fastest-growing in the world? As tough as it is for younger generations to comprehend, those older than 35 remember a better, more hopeful time for Thailand, tipped to become the Fifth Tiger of Asia, poised to join Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan as Asia's leading economies. Our national economy grew 8-13% annually for a decade between 1985 to 1996, and the income of the average Thai citizen was three times that of someone in China.

» 1. Until March 31, Paul Smith -- the British fashion brand that coined the phrase "classic with a twist" -- will host a pop-up installation featuring home products from Italian brand Toiletpaper, a collection of classic-looking porcelain cups, bowls and plates that sport a variety of strange, printed patters, such as a horse, a plumber or a set of palm-less fingers (don't ask us why). The installations can be found at the Paul Smith official stores at EmQuartier and Siam Paragon.

When monsters attack

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 10/03/2017

» Kong: Skull Island seems like it tries -- and largely fails -- to present a serious, deep message, even though it often veers into the campy territory so many monster films seem to occupy. Most of the characters -- of which there are unnecessarily many -- are completely devoid of personality or even purpose, getting introduced only to eventually become monster-snacks, offering absolutely nothing to the plot beyond creating a false sense of mortality for the obvious band of destined survivors. The plot, as anyone familiar with King Kong's lore can surmise, is also nothing new, and is actually quite similar to the Peter Jackson-directed King Kong's (2005) plot of a group of outsiders surviving on a hostile island dominated by the giant ape.

No longer the mainstream

» TrueVisions, the veteran cable TV service provider, in January sent viewers reeling after a decision to discontinue six major TV and film channels -- most notably those under the HBO brand. The company then announced plans to drop an additional 11 channels from its line-up just a month later and though the operator has replaced the cancelled channels with seven new ones, plus giving other incentives to its million-plus subscribers, the clamour has been audible.

The marvel of Logan

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 03/03/2017

» It's a boundless shame, to say the least, that both Hugh Jackman and Sir Patrick Stewart will both be making their departures from their respective roles as Wolverine and Professor X after Logan, the 10th entry to their long-running X-Men franchise. Doubly so, since both actors have never been as riveting as they are in Logan, one of the best superhero films ever made, telling a very grounded, personal story about a broken man, not a superhero or larger-than-life symbol. In this regard, Logan elevates itself from a superb superhero film to a superb film, period, one that all superhero films to come should strive to emulate.
