Sisters are doin' it for themselves

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 22/06/2017

» Call it teen power. Or the epitome of kawaii culture. Or a great marketing idea. Some may also detect a strange, Lolita-tinted vibe. But with their own TV, anime and manga series, as well as the record for "highest selling musical act in Japan in terms of singles sold", AKB48, with 48 members, are a long-standing Japanese idol girl-group known for their super-cute style and catchy tunes. It has been described as a national phenomenon in its country of origin, with a devoted fanbase that has followed the band's songs and merchandise since its inception over a decade ago in 2005.

» Internet users have most likely heard of crowdfunding, the concept of acquiring funding for projects from voluntary public contributions, usually online. But while most crowdfunding platforms (Kickstarter, IndieGoGo, etc) are usually focused on the funding of cool ideas or products, Weeboon -- a new Thailand-based platform -- is currently leveraging the power of social media and online crowdfunding towards charitable causes, allowing NGOs, companies and members of the public to receive the funds for pursuing their causes.

Waiting on Vol 3

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 28/04/2017

» Prior to 2014, most of us have probably never even heard of Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy series, let alone expect to see a high-budget film adaptation of it become universally praised. Filled with the humour, heart and the visual spectacles Marvel has always been so good at, director James Gunn captured lightning with the first film. Marvel seems to agree, which is why Vol 2 was produced, arriving in Thai theatres earlier this week.

Seeking status

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 18/04/2017

» Thailand has long seen a great influx of foreign migrants and workers from its surrounding neighbours, such as Myanmar or Laos. It is also home to many smaller ethnic minority groups such as the Karen, Hmong or Lahu. However, Thailand has never had the best track record when it comes to dealing with these foreign or ethnic minorities, especially when it comes to documentation. This poses a problem to these minorities, many of whom have lived in Thailand for decades, as they don't have the legal documents and identification often required in various situations, from medical or school applications to basic protection of law.

Not-so-great expectations

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 14/04/2017

» As the old saying goes, "too much of a good thing is a bad thing". Fast 8: Fate Of The Furious -- the latest entry to the long-running action/racing franchise -- is an apt example of this phrase, a film that tries so hard to outdo itself the results border on the satirical. While the Fast And Furious films have always managed to maintain their popularity through escalation of everything, from the action choreography to the conflict and the stakes, Fast 8 seems to have gone just a hair too far, with characters performing incredulous feats that wouldn't look out of place in a Marvel film.
