Hijabs rocking to the funky, funky beats

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 17/09/2015

» You could almost smell the collective excitement and youthful energy emanating from the nearly 20,000 gathered at Sunway Lagoon, the water park and resort (and shopping mall, university, etc.) -- the site of this year's MTV World Stage concert, which took place in Kuala Lumpur last Saturday.

The 8-bit allure

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 11/09/2015

» The pixelated 8-bit joy of youth: Super Mario Bros, Mega Man, Punch Out!!. Who would've thought, however, that there'd be so many people who are still into those old video games? Certainly not Dhyan Ho, the current organiser of 8-Bit Bangkok, a gathering of like-minded adults who enjoy playing the video games of their childhood over some cold beer and good conversation.

Reasons for back-breaking

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 11/09/2015

» Many would probably agree with me that watching Tony Jaa deliver righteous fury upon scores of bad guys is all good fun in and of itself. When we actually think about it, Jaa's past characters have committed untold absurdities to hundreds of people (who, to be fair, probably deserve it) for pretty minor reasons. The seminal Ong Bak is about a guy who wreaks havoc through the streets of Bangkok, probably causing millions of baht worth of damages, all for the head of a Buddha statue. In Tom Yum Goong, he was a guy who single-handedly brought down an international crime cartel because they made a fossil exhibit out of his favourite elephant. It's clear that as long as we are treated to Jaa's unmatched ability to bring the pain, the reasons why do not matter so much.

Pales in comparison to the original

» The original The Transporter series will always have a place in my heart as one of the most entertaining action flicks of all time. Jason Statham's portrayal of the mysterious Frank Martin appealed to me with his deadpan humour and silent, threatening stares, not to mention his borderline mythic skills with the wheel.

» People who have a very particular taste in music will know that finding the right songs amid the absolute deluge of tunes available on the internet can be daunting. Recommendations from friends don’t always help, as they may or may not enjoy the same kind of music as you. Luckily, there is now a way to get recommendations from like-minded people.

Down with comics

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 21/08/2015

» From the 1970s onwards, a huge number of Thai children have grown up reading Japanese comic books that formed a big part of their pop-cultural upbringing. Thai publisher Vibulkij led the charge by becoming the first to actually acquire licenses to publish comic books in Thailand in 1992. Adopting the Japanese model of releasing weekly magazines containing single chapters from various series, Vibulkij launched Friday, Thailand's first weekly manga magazine. These magazines gave readers the advantage of reading ahead of the collected volumes, of which only several were released each year for each series.
