Come for the hooters, stay for the wings

Guru, Pasavat Tanskul, Published on 22/06/2018

» On the corner of Soi Thaniya on Silom Road is the newest branch of Hooters, sitting in what was once Flann O'Brien's Irish Pub. The American sports bar franchise, with its famous buffalo wings, beers and of course, Hooters Girls, is no stranger to the country as this newest outlet is the third in Bangkok -- the sixth overall in the country -- to be established. Curious customers who have yet to set foot in one of the eatery chains can do so now with ease as this branch is a few steps away from BTS Sala Daeng and a five-minute walk from MRT Silom.

The rise of Thailand's techno queen

Guru, Pasavat Tanskul, Published on 08/06/2018

» From her humble beginnings as a rural country girl from Nakhon Ratchasima and working jobs in factories and IT to becoming one of Thailand's most prominent and leading female underground techno DJs today, Seephrai Mungphanklang, better known as Nakadia, was first exposed to the techno scene during her first trip to Europe in 2002, when she stepped inside a German club and saw German music producer Marusha perform. With a love for partying and techno music, it was this moment where her friend and manager Sebastian Lehmann encouraged her to become a DJ. She decided to learn the craft, buying vinyls and turntables, where she eventually started her career by DJ'ing at Koh Samui before moving to Berlin, Germany where she would ultimately perform all over the world to become the global sensation she is today. She previously performed for one night at Violett in Thong Lor back in May 25, and has recently been featured in Mixmag's latest episode of the Global Dancefloor documentary series, which focuses on three female DJs (Nakadia, Mendy Indigo and X0809) pushing the techno scene in Thailand. The techno queen is now set to embark on a European summer tour later this year which includes playing sets at world-famous gigs such as Elrow Ibiza and Tomorrowland, becoming the first Thailand DJ to play at the prestigious event.

Hidden in plain sight

Guru, Pasavat Tanskul, Published on 08/06/2018

» There is no doubt Thailand's nightlife is booming with bars and drinks with unusual names and concoctions. And speaking of which, for every new bar that opens, there has to be a gimmick of some sort to attract bar patrons. Which brings us to this week's cover story for which we went around the city looking for bars with hard-to-spot entrances. After constantly getting lost and double checking Google Maps on our phones, we managed to list four hidden (well not-so-hidden now that we're writing about them) bars for the adventurous bar hoppers who would like to do a bit of effort in getting a drink. Half the fun is discovering them on your own so we included an elusive metre in terms of difficulty finding each tavern, as well as providing a few hints to help guide you on your way. Whether you have already discovered them (shush!) or in need of a change of setting and have a sense of exploration with friends, then Godspeed!

» Here at GURU, we love our smartphones. As we live in an age where one wonders what would we do without our handheld devices, people in the technology world are constantly developing apps to make our lives easier -- with our phones. We've saved you the hassle and created a list of free-to-download apps that are useful in the Big Mango -- kind of like a Swiss Army knife for the techie (okay, so maybe your phone can't cut things).

Parts unknown

» Named after the house number and the road where it is located, 100 Mahaseth serves North and Northeastern Thai cuisines with a modern twist. Those who frequent the Charoen Krung area or work in Sathon or Silom may have walked past 100 Mahaseth's metallic rust-coloured front with a warehouse-garage looking facade a few times, as the restaurant opened last September. Originally opened only for dinner, 100 Mahaseth has expanded their opening hours to include lunch. And for those who haven't dined here, prepare to have an unique dining experience -- nose-to-tail.
