Welcoming a new decade!

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 03/01/2020

» For those of you who may have missed it, we are in a new decade. Yes, you read that right. No, you are not hallucinating. Yes, we are all old. Welcome to the beginning of the 2020s where films like Back To The Future and Blade Runner are not just classics but the future worlds depicted in them are now effectively in the past; where years like 2050 and 2060 no longer sound ridiculous like they did back in the early 2000s and where those born in 2000 are 20 years old. It's a lot to take in, that's for sure. With every new year also comes the declarations of "New year, new me" posted all over social media and vocally announced at dinner tables everywhere. Resolutions are made and kept for a good two weeks or so before being thrown out the window. So instead of trying to expect things to happen that we aren't even sure will happen, let's take a look at the stuff that we're fairly certain will happen this year. Here's a couple of things to look forward to this 2020.

Witchers & monsters

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 27/12/2019

» The Witcher, which was released last week on Netflix, follows Geralt of Rivia, played by the ridiculously good-looking Henry Cavill, a mutated monster-hunter who prefers keeping to himself though destiny has other plans. We attended the show's fan event in Manila, the Philippines, where we sat down with the show's showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, who has also worked on The Umbrella Academy and Daredevil, to talk about The Witcher.

Holiday party essentials

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 20/12/2019

» Like most holiday seasons (we have a few in Thailand), this is a time for celebration, a time for giving and getting together with friends and loved ones. Whether it's for a classy Christmas dinner with the grandparents and all the relatives or a rowdy night out with the pals on New Year's Eve, you're bound to have lots of parties and get-togethers. Though you may be looking forward to the parties, there may be things stressing you out: What if your friends choose to party at a place that's really far where traffic is horrible? What if you have multiple get-togethers on one day and can't go home for an outfit change between events? What if you have nothing to wear to all these parties but even if you did, you don't have the budget for it? 'Tis the season and at Guru we are all about reducing your stress. We've got stuff that can help you out.

Flying high

» Yosuke Chatmaleerat is a number of different things. He's a gymnast, pianist and pilot — three things which require a lot of dedication, practice and skill. He's skilled in all three at just 27 years old and if that doesn't make you question what you've been doing in your life, he's recently just got another achievement under his belt. Well, it's more of a record. He now holds the Guinness World Record for the fastest journey through all 48 mainland states of the US by helicopter.

Cluckin' good

» Uncle Tigger's is originally from Chiang Mai, but has moved to Bangkok and opened at Soi Bearing and Ari. I visited their Sukhumvit 107 branch, which is a refurbished warehouse with a lot of natural light and a soothing colour scheme of white and yellow, the brand's signature colours. The seats and ambience make it feel like it's an upscale fast food joint.

Still roasting

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 29/11/2019

» For eight years, Roast has been synonymous with mouth-watering, brunch comfort food -- and it still is. So when they said that a menu revamp was in the works, it was a little worrying and a little exciting. Change is always a little uncomfortable and the fear of saying goodbye to favourite dishes is a painful ordeal. Okay, I exaggerate, but still, it hurts. But despite Roast changing up 50% of their menu, I can tell you right now that you can rest easy because they've embraced the new while still keeping the familiar stuff that made them a brunch icon in the city.

Thai pride

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 15/11/2019

» Thailand is well-known around the world for a number of things: beautiful beaches, great food and extremely friendly people, to name a few. It's also home to a variety of homegrown talent be it in the entertainment industry or elsewhere. Sure, you can probably name a bunch off the top of your head that people go gaga for right here in the country, but there's also a number of them who are pretty well-known internationally, some of whom you may not be aware of. Either way, these are people who are making their motherland proud and whose works are worthy to be celebrated. From make-up artists to cake designers, here are Thais who are getting recognition locally and internationally for their work.

App-solutely smooth

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 01/11/2019

» We at Guru know we're snarky about Bangkok at times -- OK, most of the time -- but like any other city, there are things we hate about it and there are things we love about it.
