» At the second edition of Wonderfruit, a four-day arts and lifestyle festival which begins this Thursday, we don't only have international acts to look forward to. Sure, there's soulful lyricism from rapper Yasiin Bey (AKA Mos Def), the much-hyped R&B duo Rhye whose songs like Open are sure to transport you into a trance, and Com Truise's catchy synth pop. But at the festival our home-grown bands have a lot to offer too.

The biggest opera in history

» Thai-American author and composer Somtow Sucharitkul's opera The Silent Prince (Temiya Jataka) premiered in Houston five years ago to rave reviews. Last year, his restructured Mahajanaka Symphony, built on the success of his ballet-opera Suriyothai, was met with equal success. So with two down and another eight tales from the epic cycle of the Dasjati Jatakas (Ten Lives Of The Buddha) to go, Somtow's ballet-opera Bhuridat (The Dragon Lord), opening tomorrow at Thailand Cultural Centre, marks the third and the beginning of a five-year project to create and stage all episodes.

No apologies for Sari

» It was a full house at Aksra Theatre earlier this month for the performance, Sari, by the Daksha Sheth Dance Company, a programme that was part of this year's Festival of India In Thailand. Throughout the one-hour performance, dancers moved with yarn and strips of cloth, along with fluid stage lights and accompanied by original a cappella songs.

Staging an LGBT revolution

» It all started one day in July, when Sun Tawalwongsri visited Silom Society coffee shop and saw empty space on the fifth floor and rooftop, with BTS Skytrains passing by. Just a few months later, the veteran director, actor and choreographer established the appropriately named Sun Dance Theatre. The theatre is now celebrating its launch with The 1st Bangkok Queer Theatre Festival, which began last week and will continue until the end of year with six productions from five directors.

Diving in with Swim Deep

» It was a full house at Mongkol RCA Studio earlier this month for English indie rock band Swim Deep. It was the first time in Bangkok for the four-piece outfit from West Midlands, which played quite a few festivals around the word, including Glastonbury last year, since the August release of its debut album Where The Heaven Are We .
