Looking the gift horse in the mouth is the point

Life, Pimrapee Thungkasemvathana, Published on 03/03/2015

» At the front of the line, a boy pushes his friend forward as his turn approaches. His friend is eager. They have been waiting in line since before 9am to get their teeth cleaned, cavities filled or milk teeth extracted. Four dental chairs are lined up, and volunteer dentists from the Private Dentist Foundation of Thailand work tirelessly. When a child is finished being treated, a nurse runs off with a tray of equipment to be washed, go through a UV-light cleaning system and sealed up in sterile bags. The dentist wipes down the station.

Going for Gold

» 'I remember the exact moment. It was in 2004. Hurricane Charlie swept through our town. I remember the only channel we had was NBC. We were sitting there watching the Athens Games. I remember that exact moment. I was watching this girl, Carly Patterson, and she won the Olympic All-Around Champion medal. I was like 'Man, that chick is 16 and she's a gold medallist'. That's the ultimate dream of any athlete — to compete in the greatest stage in the world. And I knew I wanted to go there one day but I had no idea how. BMX wasn't in the Olympics in 2004," says Amanda Carr. She was only 14 years old then.

The annual Vegetarian Festival, which ends on Thursday, is celebrated not by just believers, young and old, in white and in every other colour, but also by the media and sponsors ranging from banks to amusement parks.

Give and let live

» Picture a motorbike messenger delivering your dying mother, father, sister or lover a heart for transplant. The donated heart must be preserved in a solution at about 4C and can only remain viable for transplant for no more than four hours, though a kidney can last up to 24 hours. And not all dead bodies are viable for organ donation. Only donors who have been declared brain-dead by three doctors, or on life support and with functioning disease-free organs, will be considered. More importantly, the organ must match the body of the recipient.
