A Kick of Sanzo

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 10/03/2017

» Gregory Sanzo, 30, isn't the first foreigner to fall madly in love with our national martial arts to the point of moving here and making a career out of it. But he is a rare interesting one with a lot going on when he sets foot outside the famous Petchyindee Muay Thai Academy where he trains. Before becoming a professional fighter, this Houston native was serious about soccer and music, playing bass in a punk hardcore band under the same label as A Day to Remember, Victory Records. We catch up with the active athlete, musician and entrepreneur to learn about his moves in and out of the ring.

Wine Me Dine Me Indeed

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 13/01/2017

» The Setting: Cantina Wine Bar & Italian Kitchen graces Ari with its first trattoria, a restaurant serving up true Italian comforts. Managed by Soho Hospitality, the group that has also brought us Havana Social, Charcoal and Above Eleven, it's no wonder the interior of this cozy and casual little Italian spot is so on point. Candle-lit for its evening opening hours, the best date seats are near the windows or against the rustic brick walls. Winos, however, will demand for the tables at the base of the glorious wine cellar in the middle of the restaurant. To reach the top of this bottle library, you'd have to climb the wooden ladder perched against it, or swing from the chandelier from the second floor. We recommend neither. You should just ask the staff, unless the owner of the establishment Matthew Milotich is already grabbing you some of the good stuff. But no matter where you sit in this intimate setting, you've got a view of the wine and of chefs hustling behind the counter. Pizza chefs work in calmer situations up at a baking station on a more private second floor.

Modern natives

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 12/08/2016

» In Japan, a young person dressed in full traditional kimono in the big city on a regular day is no spectacle. Nor does there need to be a special occasion in India or Bangladesh to don a vibrant saree. So why in a country that far from lacks traditional culture and a city that loves fashion, have we shied away from the beauty and uniqueness of Thai fabrics and traditional style? I mean when was the last time you wore a proper pha nung or chong kraben?

One-way ticket girl

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 10/06/2016

» We've all fantasised about leaving it all behind to explore the world full-time, but let's be real — how many of us would realistically opt out of stability and having nice stuff? Kookai — Piyapattra Chaimahawong — is one former-Bangkokian who took the road less-travelled. In November of 2015, the then 22-year-old ran with her instincts, quitting her job, putting her apartment on lease and buying a one-way ticket out of town. The spur of the moment decision ended up leading her to finding sustainability in being a digital nomad as well as a loving travel companion, Mathieu. Guru catches up with the travel bug to talk about living a location-independent life and her blog, makeajourney.co.

A true renaissance man

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 13/05/2016

» Passionate about the field of design and educated abroad extensively, Kompit Panasupon never thought he'd wind up back in Bangkok, much less become a key player in his father's serious business of academia. MAC Education, which started off as a tutoring school in the 70s, has become one of the biggest textbook publishers in the country and is understandably a big responsibility. We visited the busy 31-year-old (and his two cats) to talk about his work and views on education, but in the process, unlocked surprising facts that reveal that he never really quit being a man of the arts.

» Hollywood is a truly fascinating global phenomenon. Just take, for instance, The Oscars. Every year, the whole world, so to speak, actively tunes in to ardently agree or disagree with America's ruling on the best factors of American movies.

» Models. They are more than just bodies that make clothes look like happiness and self-worth. We come to admire models beyond the brands they adorn, seeing them not as nameless trend-wearers, but as the shining trend themselves. Indeed, the most instinctive way to stay current with fashion and style is to follow top models. Yes, walk behind them in the shadows and study their moves, from their editorial posing game to how they eat cheeseburgers. In other words, stalk them on Instagram. And who better to stalk on Instagram right now than the really, really, really ridiculously good-looking inventor of “Blue Steel” and number-one male model in the world? Earth to you, it's Derek Zoolander. Here are seven Zoolander trends from his Instagram that we need to get on top of ASAP!
