LIFE

Much wisdom here

Life, Bernard Trink, Published on 06/10/2014

» A Free Thinker but not an atheist, I evaluate the world's various religions not by their holy books, but by how their followers act when away from their temple/church/mosque. Alas, all too often, they forget the "be good, do good" sermons. Love, compassion, peace, forgiveness are sung about in hymns, but hardly ever practised.

Moments of youth

Life, Published on 03/10/2014

» Thai student films have come a long way from amateurish works done just to pass a course. This week, two movies by young filmmakers are showing at Asia's leading film festival, and their stories about teen angst are unashamedly authentic

LIFE

Yes? No? Maybe?

Life, Bernard Trink, Published on 15/09/2014

» We know what history and historical fiction is, but pseudo-history? It is fiction made to seem fact. Untrue, yet commonly believed. The origins of religions is an example, founded by an interplay between God and humans. Another is how countries came to be, such as Romulus and Remus raised by wolves. Brits are pretty sure that Robin Hood was a literary creation, but tend to accept King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

Saxophones, seaside

Life, Published on 31/07/2014

» In college, I took a course called History of Jazz. It consisted, almost in its entirety, of picking a jazz record, playing it, then writing a few sentences about each song. A regular assignment might have read something like this: “Thelonius Monk’s Boo Boo’s Birthday starts out with some piano. Then you can hear a saxophone. I think. Is that a clarinet? Well heck, why not! After that...”

Gregorian chants

Life, Bernard Trink, Published on 21/07/2014

» Since The Da Vinci Code, novelists have been trying to outdo Dan Brown with plots to rock the foundations of the beliefs of 1 billion Roman Catholics, but have had no discernible effect on Holy Mother Church. What became of Jesus, who lived and died a Jew, is a moot question.

Creative dialogue

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 16/07/2014

» It’s either very enticing or discouraging to viewers when curator Andrew Stahl says that his new exhibition “illustrates nothing” and that “we expect an electric conversation with excitement and perhaps even failure”. The show is called “Monologue Dialogue 3: Fragility And Monumentality”, currently on display on the ninth floor of Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, and the works from various artists shown together are just as overwhelming as the exhibition’s title itself.
