A forgotten heritage

Life, Thana Boonlert, Published on 03/08/2023

» To the layman, Paniat is unheard of. It is an ancient town that lies in the eastern province of Chanthaburi. It sits at the foot of Khao Sa Bap, a square settlement that was once guarded by walls but levelled out, buried and forgotten to make way for an orchard village. However, the site retains remnants of Khmer culture that highlight the dynamic interaction between Siam and its neighbours.

Complicated history and a comeback

Life, Thana Boonlert, Published on 02/06/2022

» On the partition of a quiet seaside wood house is more than an old photo from circa 1881. It is hard evidence that King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) and his entourage, including his half-brother Prince Damrong Rajanuphap, visited the island in the easternmost province of Trat before it was subject to French rule. Despite the withdrawal of troops, colonial legacies remained for years.

» The cool season is approaching and for many Thais it's time to plan a trip to one of those sea-of-fog sites. Of course, the most famous of such places are in the North and the Northeast where there are many big mountains. Turning full circle

Life, Peerawat Jariyasombat, Published on 12/12/2013

» Khun Yuam is a sleepy amphur in Mae Hong Son province that hasn't seen a great deal of excitement since the end of World War II. Right on the border with Myanmar's Shan State is the hamlet of Ban Huay Ton Noon. From there it's only 30km inland to the district capital, also called Khun Yuam, and this was the same route taken for centuries by invading armies, loggers, seasonal farm labourers and merchants carrying goods back and forth on carts drawn by teams of oxen.

Echoes of a Storied Past

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 12/09/2013

» Kanchanaburi has long been a popular destination for day-trippers. Legions of tourists, both local and foreign, regularly make the short trip from Bangkok to visit scenic Sai Yok Waterfall and remnants of the infamous Death Railway like Hellfire Pass and the renamed "Bridge On The River Kwai". But astonishingly few visitors venture into the oldest section of this laid-back town which boasts some fine examples of architecture, well-preserved buildings dating from just before World War II right back to the mid-19th century.
