US turns focus to South China Sea

» Last week, US army chief of staff Gen James McConville visited Thailand to strengthen the 65-year-old military alliance, culminating in the signing of the Strategic Vision Statement. Early this month, China held a five-day naval drill near the contested Paracel Islands. Then the US carried out military exercises in the waterway showing support for the free and open Indo-Pacific, as the South China Sea has been subject to overlapping claims by many countries, including China.

With the successful and miraculous feel-good news of the rescue, it was inevitable that plans to dramatise the entire ordeal will be made into a movie. Reportedly, six film production companies are in talks with the Thai government and have expressed interest in obtaining rights to make a dramatic movie version of the events.

» 1. This Sunday, the Documentary Club welcomes you to a special screening of the Thai film Railway Sleepers (2016). Directed by independent filmmaker Sompot Chidgasornpongse, the film is an intimate look at the lives of train commuters in Thailand, made from footage collected over the course of eight years by Sompot himself. The screening begins at 5.15pm, with tickets costing 100 baht per seat. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with the director. The Doc Club Theater is at Charoen Krung 30.
