» Born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Yunalis Zara'ai, aka Yuna, has come a long way since her MySpace days and her 2012 Pharrell Williams-produced self-titled debut. While her early materials exist mostly in the dreamy realm of folk-infused indie-pop, her subsequent output has crossed over into the R&B/hip-hop territory in a way that not many pop upstarts could pull off (her third international studio album, Chapters, welcomes guest appearances from some of the biggest names in R&B like Usher and Jhené Aiko).

» The other night at home I was listening to CDs -- yes, I'm still in the Stone Age -- and two of my favourite songs came up, Ain't No Sunshine by Bill Withers and Ain't No Mountain High Enough from Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. Apart from both being soulful numbers -- and like me, pretty ancient -- you don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to observe that a common factor in the title is the word ain't.

» From its origins as the solo project of guitarist Noppanan Panicharoen in 2006, Inspirative has steadily evolved into one of Thailand's most consistent post-rock bands. The line-up now boasts four additional members: bassist Amornthep Masawang, guitarist Pongpat Phaukwattana, drummer Sirichai Chanmanklakul and pianist/vocalist Wuttipong Huangpetch. The quintet established themselves on the Bangkok indie circuit through gigs at legendary indie nights like Dudesweet and Mind The Gap. This, naturally, led to the release of Floating Down Through The Clouds, their debut three-track EP whose title was inspired by the lyrics to Pink Floyd's 1983 prog-rock ballad, The Gunners Dream. This was followed by the equally stellar releases Mysteriously Awake and Memories Come Rushing Up To Meet Me Now.

» There's a certain genius to how female indie musicians Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus have banded together under the name boygenius (yes, all lowercase). The aim here, it seems, is to draw attention away from their gender that's often taken for granted in the male-dominated scene. Having met and bonded at the same tours and festivals over the years, the three artists realised that, not only do they share artistic visions, they also complement one another's talents.

» With a fanfare the captain arrived at the stadium. He blew his magnificent whistle and kicked out the previous teams, the sordid squads of pirates, crooks, and assassins. Who'd let them in in the first place? The captain then installed the audience on the stands and asked them to cheer him on. He composed the team song. He picked the cheerleaders, the referees, the linesmen. He picked a new set of rules, the match day, the kick-off time. In the greatest move since Pele, Socrates and Aristotle combined, he picked the players — strikers, defenders, goalies, coaches, ball boys, mascots, etc. Everyone is on the same team, got it? That's why there's only one goal, not two. Then the captain took the field, dribbled like Messi + Ronaldo + Santa Claus, waltzing past immobile players (who're on his team), then he scored, and scored, and scored. He was crowned man of the match and the world cheered and roared.

» Thailand reels over the latest scandal to hit the local media, but strangely hardly touched by the English news, part of which you are holding in your hand right now. The Bangkok Post, I mean, not the croissant!
