Wallet-friendly wagyu

» Plenty of beef lovers out there will understand it when we say that not many things in life could ever amount to the satisfaction of tucking into a piece of steak cooked to your absolute liking. The birth of your first child, maybe. Winning the lottery, possibly. But aside from those occasions, cutting into a medium rare rib eye that has perfect marbling is rather hard to beat.

Maki Munchies

» My initial thought upon hearing about Thailand's first sushi burrito was, "What has this world come to?" Next thing you know it'll be pla ra popcorn, pad thai burger and ramen pizza on the fad list. My lack of interest in fusion food stems from the fact that more often than not, bringing two things that have already been perfected, mashing them together and hoping for the best just doesn't seem to bounce with my (taste)buds.

» Noodles are another one of our favourite staples for when we can't bring ourselves to eat yet another phad krapow. The joy of customising every minute detail of your order -- from choice of noodle, soup or no soup, to what veg to skip -- to your absolute liking is the pleasure of visiting a noodle shop.

Sugar, ice and everything nice

» Good news, people. The National Research Department of All Delicious Things That Are Apparently Bad For You has made a new scientific discovery: low-calorie diets are actually bad for you. It is, in fact, better to consume fatty, sugary, carb-loaded foods, such as doughnuts, ice cream cake and chocolate frappes. Y'know, like how the Neanderthals were doing it for thousands of years before the vegans took over the world with their quinoa and chia seeds?

Pumped-up pedalling

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 22/01/2016

» Last week, I lost the love of my life: my Bluetooth headphones. They were no longer playing music the way they were supposed to, only blasting out incoherent sounds from one of the buds. Sure, I tried turning them on and off, charging them, hitting them against the wall a couple of times. But it was too late -- my best gym buddy was dead.

Let's roll

» Not to sound like an uncivilised Bangkokian, too uncouth and ill-groomed to fit in with the well-mannered hi-sos who ever-so-graciously provide our city with such sophistication and class, but I've found myself, on various occasions, without the time to sit down and enjoy a proper lunch. I've actually become incredibly adept at eating on the go. Literally. I can speed walk while enjoying a 7-Eleven sandwich with ease, and I've even mastered the eating-and-driving manoeuvre. Is it safe? Probably not. But when you're living in this traffic-clogged metropolis, you learn to multitask.

Nomad's land

» Sun, sand and sea are no longer the only features that Phuket has to offer. Pristine beaches and clear blue skies are usually the images we conjure up with every mention of the famed Southern island province, but the recent trend in Phuket's hospitality scene has seen some of the most stunning resorts moving away from beachfront and inland, toward lush verdant valleys.

A dose of history

» Sanon "Sa" Wangsrangboon, co-founder of Once Again Hostel (22 Soi Samran Rat, www.onceagainhostel.com), is determined to give his guests an enriching experience that includes comfort, well-equipped facilities and top-class service. But perhaps most interesting is that he and his team have forged strong relationships with nearby communities, bridging the gap between travellers and locals, tradition and modernism, making every stay there unique — and one of the most authentic travel experiences in Bangkok.

Pick up a healthy habit

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 04/09/2015

» I like to think that I lead a relatively healthy lifestyle. I drag myself to the gym at least five days a week and even try to avoid carbs for dinner -- big emphasis on "try".
