» Pizzeria Mazzie may not be all big and glam but it's not plain and simple either. Located at Park Lane Ekkamai, the resto is small yet furnished with the likes of an Italian marble countertop for the "bar" where you can watch your pizza being made in full view, as well as Coach leather seats. If you're with friends and family, there are a number of tables for you to get comfortable at, but I strongly suggest sitting at the "bar" where you can converse with owner and chef Jon Spearman while he makes your pizza from scratch before putting it into the Napolitan Acunto oven. He'll frequently be greeted by a number of regulars coming in for dinner or for a takeaway, and he'll say a quick hello to new customers filing in, which really gives the place a homey, welcoming feel. That's something you don't feel at a lot of restaurants these days and it's something that really made me love Pizzeria Mazzie -- and we haven't even gotten to the food yet.

» Ariel Zetina may be best known as one of Chicago's fiercest DJs (the Mother of the Windy City Club Scene, as some have suitably appointed her), but she's more than meets the eye. Having come from a theatre and poetry background, the American-Belizean artist is well-versed in cutting-edge performance art. In fact, her first foray into music-making was born out of necessity, simply because she couldn't find a piece of music that would fit a show she was working on as part of collaborative performance art group Witch Hazel. After relocating to Chicago some years later, she finally found her place and essentially herself in the city's thriving queer/trans club scene, which provided her with the impetus to fuse house and techno sounds with her own multicultural flavours.

» It seems a little odd when you first glimpse the exterior of the resto because you would think it was a legit Italian osteria found on the side of a cobbled road. But then you take a look around and realise you're in CentralWorld. Walking in, the resto does a great job of making you feel as if you are in Italy. While they do sell pizzas and other things to go at the entrance, going inside for a proper meal is where it's at because not only does the ambience transport you but so does the food.

» Father Joseph Maier, an Irish American priest who has dedicated his life to helping marginalised and abused children in Klong Toey, Bangkok, will be well-known to long-time readers of the Bangkok Post. His short stories on these children and their struggles are, in my view, among the best written in the Bangkok Post. They present some of the saddest yet most uplifting tales you'll read about. Father Joe’s stories pull at the heart strings and make you take notice.
