Giving a fair chance

» People with special needs may be able to receive education but they haven't been given a fair chance in terms of employment. And that's exactly what Max Simpson wants to change. The 31-year-old educator is the co-founder of Steps with Theera (stepswiththeera.com), a cafe on Ekamai Soi 10 that is staffed by trainees with cognitive disabilities. It also functions as a vocational training centre for them. Through showing what they are capable of, Max hopes, those born with cognitive disabilities will be given more opportunities to work and contribute to society.

» There have been two things on our mind during the last week besides Bangkok Shutdown and Lin Hui’s pregnancy. They are #selfieolympics and #bikinibridge. The former is the latest trend in photo-taking (seemingly for people who have smartphones, too much time on their hands and a big mirror in front of them) while the latter is a hoax (which we sure hope will really catch on in Thailand). They inspired us to search for lesser-known creative (and cuckoo) photo trends appearing in Thai social media that you may not be aware of. Help popularise them (at your own risk).

» New Year’s is time to look back at what has happened during the year that is about to pass. The media usually takes this opportunity to do a round-up of memorable moments. As an esteemed publication ourselves, we decided to do our very own recapping of 2013 (and because we’re too lazy to go out and find new stories). » Ademonstration against a controversial dam project in Mae Wong National Park will start at Bangkok Art and Culture Centre tomorrow. The dam plan has been criticised for its lack of transparency, questionable effi ciency in preventing future fl ooding and its threat to irreplaceable trees and wildlife. To deputy PM Plodprasob Suraswadi, forests can be regrown and wildlife bred, but an online petition against the project on Change.org has garnered over 113,401 signatures, becoming the biggest campaign of its kind in Asia (who knew that Thais are such environmentalists?!).

» Sometimes we can go a bit crazy while trying to solve a problem. For example, in order to deter office thieves, you may have to stick a note on your lunchbox with a message saying, "This belongs to [your name] and those who eat it will be cursed with impotency!". Some car owners might place plastic bottles filled with water to prevent soi dogs from marking their territory. Some walls have a sign that reads, "This is where dogs pee" to deter public urinators.
