What's in a Thai name?

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 02/11/2018

» One aspect about Thai culture that many visitors may be curious about or find fascinating is how we are named, as there seem to be some unwritten rules governing it. This week, I would like to shed some light on this unique aspect of Thai culture while airing my grievances with my fellow Thais who have encountered incidents regarding their names. Our struggle is real.

The road to redemption

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 21/09/2018

» Akkarin "Rung" Puri spent almost half of his life behind bars. Instead of hiding his dark past, he's open about his ex-inmate status and uses it to inspire convicts to change their way and campaign for understanding and, more importantly, second chance for them to be part of society again. A guitar maker (Be Light Guitar; fb.com/belightguitar) and speaker at prisons, Rung talked to us about his long road to redemption.

» As you may already know, Siam Paragon is a playground for foodies -- the ground floor and fourth floor to be more specific -- and a new Japanese import just made itself home on Paragon's street level. Such is the life in Bangkok whenever famous food import lands on our soil.

Spilling the Tea

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 29/06/2018

» Remember when bubble tea was all the rage in Bangkok? There's another ongoing trend hidden in tea shops' menus that you may not be aware of, namely, cheese tea. Accordingly to a 2017 article by Condé Nast Traveler, cheese tea started from street stalls in Taiwan and later become so popular in China that people queued up for hours to sip it. And it has been a thing in Bangkok for some time now -- since around late last year, to my best knowledge -- and Ditto Modern Tea on the second floor of CentralWorld is one of such shops that offers this curious concoction, and more.

Food in mini forest

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 08/06/2018

» Contrary to its name, GISMO isn't techie, futuristic or gimmicky in any way. Instead, it's a low-key dining spot with a relaxed and welcoming ambience. You'll be sitting in a rustic warehouselike space with high ceiling and exposed beams. The floor-to-ceiling windows with thin frames amply allow in natural light to brighten up the place while pops of flora and leaves add life and softness to the space. Most of the plants are artificial but have a soothing effect on you nonetheless, making the space a little forest in the city. There weren't much to distract you from what's on the plate as the only background music is the fountain's trickling.
