» Twenty-five years ago I joined a team from the Japan Foundation on a tour of Isan to meet and talk to molam artists, as part of a project on Lao music in the region. We met up with the then-president of the Molam Association, National Artist Kane Dalao, and his two female molam partners, Boonpeng Faiphewchai and Chaweewan Damnoen (both later awarded national artist status), and joined the trio as they performed concerts in villages for social ceremonies like weddings in and around Khon Kaen.

» There have been some memorable live performances at Paradise Bangkok nights over the past five years. Yasothon province’s Dao Bandon was one of the first, and he was followed by the debut of the ZudRangMa record label member, The Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band, who provided the backing for luk thung Isan stalwart Saksiam Petchchompu and molam star Pimjai Petchpalangjai. Another 1970s molam star, Aungkanang Kunchai, one of the great singers of the genre currently performing, gave her first Bangkok gig in 30 years at one of the shows.

» The founding DJs of the popular Paradise Bangkok nights, Chris Menist and Maft Sai, are back with a bang this week with a Fifth Anniversary at Mongkhol Studio RCA on Friday night. I spoke with Maft Sai last month about the preparations and he said that this would be the biggest event of the series so far. Both DJs will be spinning vinyl from all corners of the planet but the highlight will certainly be the Paradise Bangkok Molam International band performing with luk thung and lae legend Kwanjit Sriprajan and molam star Yenjit Porntawi.
