Italics straightens up

Guru, Adam Kohut, Published on 13/11/2015

» A few months ago Guru reviewed Italics, a kind-of Italian restaurant built upon the foundation of an odd-yet-fun menu that focused as heavily on concept as food. We believed it then (and still do) to be a hidden gem, obfuscated only by an ever-so-slightly out of the way location (i.e. not directly in line with the flow of Sukhumvit traffic).

A brush with artistic greatness

Guru, Adam Kohut, Published on 13/11/2015

» It is Saturday afternoon and, as can be expected, I am riding about a six (out of 10) on the grouchy scale. My girlfriend, Tessa, also her usual self, is happy enough to blanch the gloom from much of the Northern hemisphere. We have signed up to take an art class offered by our hotel, a sleek little outfit in Chiang Mai called the Akyra Manor.

Beast mode

Guru, Adam Kohut, Published on 06/11/2015

» For the last year, visitors to and citizens of Chiang Mai have been drawn toward the canary-yellow paint of Beast Burger's food truck, eager to order from a simple three-item menu that delivers exactly what is promised: forces of nature.

Meat love you long time

Guru, Adam Kohut, Published on 06/11/2015

» A converted shipping container on Charoen Rat Road marks the kerbside location of Butcher Beef & Beer, an approximately one-month-old cook-it-yourself restaurant focusing on, you got it, beef and beer. Diners, who at the time of our visit were predominantly young and good-looking, sit on wooden stools and tables, which can be moved in- or outdoors, depending on the weather. At each table is a portable gas cooker, on which various cuts of beef, chicken, pork and seafood are prepared. The atmosphere is intimate, but not formal, a locale perfect for a start -- or an end -- to a night out. An indie-rock soundtrack will back your meal here, further adding to the hipster vibe.

Playing for team farang?

Life, Adam Kohut, Published on 03/11/2015

» One summer when I was young, my mother, my younger brother Clay and I piled into the family Chevrolet Blazer -- a tan-coloured vehicle we had inexplicably named Sparky -- to make the eight-hour trip south, from Fort Worth to Kingsville, Texas, where my grandparents lived (and still do) in a stately white house that as far as I can tell has stood there since the dawn of time.

A house of meat, a carnivore's palace

Guru, Adam Kohut, Published on 16/10/2015

» You won’t find much in terms of setting at El Toro House of Meat. Situated on the corner of Sukhumvit Soi 29, the glass-fronted restaurant-butcher is a small place, looking out onto the lurching creep of heavy traffic, with enough seating room for only a handful of diners. Standing guard at the entrance is a display counter of fresh cuts of beef, pork and lamb for sale, some imported from countries such as Argentina, Australia and New Zealand, others from Grand Beef Farm near Phitsanulok, where the restaurants’ co-owners, Jacob Schenhav and Jair Da Rosa (who serves as El Toro’s chef), raise Wagyu cattle.

Oh, you'll scream for it, all right

Guru, Adam Kohut, Published on 09/10/2015

» Boca Scoop was a surprise -- and perhaps a curse -- appearing about two months ago, seemingly overnight, just across the street from this Guru writer's gym. Since its opening, he has been going at least thrice weekly to gorge on its house-made ice cream, which is easily among the best in Bangkok. Indeed, Boca Scoop is an oddity, located in the far reaches of Udom Suk, between sois 51 and 53, in an open-fronted shophouse with corrugated tin walls painted in bright, block colours. Nevertheless, it is a welcome addition to a neighbourhood that is on the verge of "up and coming".

The fads of tomorrow

Guru, Adam Kohut, Published on 25/09/2015

» Alas, Bike for Mom has passed us by. But does that mean Bangkok's cycling craze is over? Heavens and mercy, no! Cycling, somehow, has wriggled into a place of semi-permanence in the heart of urban Thailand. Despite Bangkok being the world's most ill-suited place for cycling (besides the bombed-out husk of Aleppo and the lost city of Atlantis), it is nonetheless rolling on two-wheels toward eco-friendly glory, aided by unrelenting media coverage and a crazed public support that is both impressive and frightening.

Indique's ingenious comfort

Guru, Adam Kohut, Published on 18/09/2015

» Indique is located on the second floor of the Park 22 building, on Sukhumvit Soi 22. The interior is decorated in gaudy yet attractive golds, purples and dark browns, colours befitting Indian cuisine's country of origin. There is also a large balcony, perfect for smoking shisha or relaxing with a few drinks. Like the menu, the restaurant's decor is a seamless blend of the modern and traditional. Indique has been in operation for approximately eight months, but is still a relative secret in Bangkok. But like all juicy secrets, it will in all probability soon be outed.
