What a Tees!

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 09/10/2015

» Every once in awhile, upon conscious examination of the state of our closets, we give ourselves the usual ultimatum: NO MORE T-SHIRTS. These simple just-pull-over-your-head-and-you’re-ready-to-face-the-world garments are, for many reasons, so easy to obtain and just as hard to get rid of. It only gets worse with the epidemic of edgy local fashion brands on Instagram. If you don’t think you’re strong enough to resist buying tees that are at the top of the game right now, please look away.

Graduation checklist

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 02/10/2015

» There's one part of higher education in Thailand we can confidently say is more impressive and challenging than that of any other country -- our graduation ceremonies. It's every Thai parent's dream to see their grown kids suffer through at least two full days -- dress rehearsal and the actual commencement -- of outdoor photo shoots while dressed in elaborate uniforms, plus the gown, props and an inhuman amount of make-up and hairspray. Did I mention that we're in a tropical country where it is pretty much the scorching summer year-round?!

Get your fix at Jones the Grocer

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 24/09/2015

» Minimal enclosure of Jones the Grocer, located on EmQuartier's ground floor, further opens the space of an already sizable food shop. There is no real entrance, but instead an absence of barriers, particularly where food is sold, to tempt you into stepping in for a look at cold cuts and condiments. Once you get past the shelves stocked with your pantry's wishlist, you can decide to sit for a meal at one of the tables near the delicatessen you've just admired or further back, near the glass walls closer to the outside environment -- which isn't much, but it is pleasantly lit during the day. If you find more comfort in urban cafe arrangements, there are also communal high tables with stools near the counter where chefs prep, and another grocery area dedicated to wines.

Surf the brunch wave

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 21/08/2015

» For a moment, the use of the words "Japanese" and "brunch" together had me tilting my head. From my experiences and, well, heritage (I'm half-Japanese), my idea of what Japanese people eat for their morning meal is the epitome of culinary minimalism -- a hot bowl of rice, topped with natto, ume or pickles, or a raw egg and miso soup -- is not something that would be served at award-winning hotel restaurants.

Cone you eat the whole thing?

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 21/08/2015

» We've seen pizza chains attempt to excite us by making square or rectangular pizzas -- wow, so impressive -- but here's a chain that has turned the classic flat circle into a 3D geometrical shape. Kono Pizza, an Italian pizza franchise, is now serving its famous cone-shaped pizza at Terminal 21.

Easy streets

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 31/07/2015

» Publications are always so keen on naming the top-whatever cities to live in or visit. We don't normally bother with such trivial and arbitrary lists, but we're tired of these articles completely overlooking the benefits of Bangkok. When talking about our fair city, people often (and unfairly) think of only two things -- traffic and the blasphemous industry of which we don't speak because we're a Buddhist country so we pretend it doesn't exist. That has to end. This week, we give you 10 reasons why living in Bangkok should be everyone's dream.

Playtime at Batcat Toy Museum

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 31/07/2015

» Collecting, in my opinion, is an underappreciated pursuit in this city. We're so easily amazed by the new and shiny that we don't seem to care about passion-driven projects.
