Debunking Bangkok's bunker

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 01/07/2016

» Where else on Sathon would a mod American night-time eatery and bar called Bunker be located on other than the suave Soi 12? Bunker, a reference to a fortified military shelter, sought to recreate the concept of refuge with contrasting architecture and interior design. The steel and concrete shell of a long-gone massage parlour camouflages a warm and lively secret. That warm glow you feel upon stepping inside? It comes from two places: the radiant bar and the exceptional hospitality of the staff. You can still feel the aura from the private upper floors, used exclusively for dining. The low-key outdoor area on the third floor would make an ideal spot to enjoy cold beer on tap, once the rainy season passes.

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 24/06/2016

» It's that time of year again. The time of year to get lost in European romance, tragedy, history, comedy and perhaps a little bit of all. If you've got the conviction and resources to catch all 17 films across 12 days, by all means carpe diem. Beef & Shake Doesn't Miss a Beat

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 24/06/2016

» The first time I visited Beef & Shake, unannounced, I was around Chong Nonsi, hungry and also desperate for a place to briefly anchor ship to put the finishing touches on a story I was supposed to submit a day earlier. Knowing my affinity for mushroom burgers, my entourage suggested a new burger place near the BTS that had, not just one, but several options of fungi burgers.

Inked for a week

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 24/06/2016

» What's left to talk about in style after clothes, accessories, hair and make-up, but skin? And we're not just after skincare, which takes ages to show subtle results, but something trendy you can do to your skin instantly, temporarily and harmlessly for some dramatic self-expression. The hot topic in style this week is sticker tattoos. The benefits of this form of peel-on skin décor are vast, ranging from deliberately annoying conservative folks to entertaining the idea of getting a real one. Whatever your motive, you gotta know what's out there, and that's where we come in. Guru reviews three local vendors for temporary tatts, all of which can be ordered via your phone.

One-way ticket girl

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 10/06/2016

» We've all fantasised about leaving it all behind to explore the world full-time, but let's be real — how many of us would realistically opt out of stability and having nice stuff? Kookai — Piyapattra Chaimahawong — is one former-Bangkokian who took the road less-travelled. In November of 2015, the then 22-year-old ran with her instincts, quitting her job, putting her apartment on lease and buying a one-way ticket out of town. The spur of the moment decision ended up leading her to finding sustainability in being a digital nomad as well as a loving travel companion, Mathieu. Guru catches up with the travel bug to talk about living a location-independent life and her blog, makeajourney.co.

Paninis and more

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 03/06/2016

» Named after its location and cuisine, Sun Street Panini is a quaint little Italian place on the curvature of Phra Arthit Road, opposite the public park and pier. The restaurant shares the Old Town storefront uniform with its neighbours, but offers a charming individuality through interior décor. Classic gingham tablecloths cover the small-scale eatery's six tables, while pasta jars, wine bottles, moka pots and baskets of homemade bread adorn a wall, warmly welcoming us into a cozy dining atmosphere.

» Siam Square is swiftly becoming Bangkok's K-pop town, and it's not just because of the variety of wallet-friendly "Korean fashion" items on offer at the night bazaar. Every month, it seems Siam Square welcomes another cult food chain from Korea, and the latest to join the ranks is Korean tiramisu.

Roads, actually

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 20/05/2016

» Tests are supposed to measure what we know, or, more accurately, what we don't know but should know. That's why it's problematic when we're passing exams but failing in the real life situations those exams sought to mimic. This could easily be alluding to the shape of our national education in general, but we're directing our frustration to a specifically aggravating application of skill in this country: driving.
