Doc lovers rejoice!

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 18/03/2016

» It is high time for audiences who appreciate the rough-edged reality of documentary films. Of the five nominees of the Oscar for best documentary feature, three had a regular release in Bangkok cinemas (Amy, Cartel Land, The Look of Silence), something unthinkable a few years ago when no distributor wanted to risk showing non-fiction films in cinemas. Now there is almost always at least one documentary film at SF CentralWorld, with the initiation of the independent outfit Documentary Club (in the programme now is The Hunting Ground, about rape crimes in American universities).

Silence is the enemy

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 25/11/2015

» The course of Linor Abargil's life has been shaped by two extremes -- she was raped at knifepoint at 18 and six weeks later she was crowned Miss World 1998. Her story of survival and how she got her rapist a 16-year sentence in jail has turned Abargil into a household shero in her homeland Israel, as well as a globe-trotting advocate fighting against sexual violence. The 35-year-old has spoken about it extensively, probably over a hundred times all over the world in various centres and interviews -- not that it becomes any easier each time.

» As we step into the cooler months of the year, festivities and weddings begin full swing. As parties pack our social calendars, certain themes and requested dress codes have curiously still not quite disappeared yet. We bring you two brands that bring a modern and stylish edge to the redundant party themes of flapper and Frozen.

LIFE

Melancholic, dissonant memories

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 23/10/2015

» Jakrawal Nilthamrong's Vanishing Point is a story of loss, death, alternative destinies and reminiscence of sadness. It floats a few inches above the ground, it connects, disconnects and reconnects lives and fates, sometimes in a dissonant manner, and even though you may scratch your head wondering what exactly is going on, the film's semi-experimental style and narrative rupture has a strange intoxication.

Somphol Rungphanit (vocals), Piyawat Meekruea (guitar), Prateep Siri-issranan (guitar), Eaksiri Kumbungpai (bass) and Krittapong Sakulnam-anek (drums) of 25hours last year jumped on the bandwagon by signing with Genie Records, under GMM Grammy, after a seven-year stint with the independent Believe Records.
