LIFE

Strange brew

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 29/03/2018

» He went down to the crossroads, fell down on his knees, asked the Lord for mercy -- and somehow got it. In this biopic documentary, Eric Clapton -- his place in the pantheon of guitar god-dom guaranteed -- is a tragic genius denounced by his own mother and nurturing a desperate crush on his best friend's wife, which kept his guitar wailing and weeping. Here's a 60s-70s blues-rock maverick who sold his soul to heroin, cocaine, cognac, whatever, and when he emerged from the pit and things began to feel wonderful tonight, he lost his son in a terrible, terrible accident. That a new documentary about his life to date is allowed to end happily is proof that rock'n'roll (and life itself) can cheat the claws of fate and go on for longer than 12 bars.

Romancing Bangkok

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 26/08/2016

» Paris had Paris Je T'aime, New York had New York I Love You. Now Bangkok has its own film ensemble drawn from different neighbourhoods of the city. Bangkok Stories, a portmanteau of six films telling tales of brief encounters and nebulous romance, will premier tonight at the 20th Short Film and Video Festival at Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, before going on to cinema and television release later.

Intimate, contemporary and queer

Life, Published on 11/12/2014

» The first Bangkok Queer Theatre Festival is drawing to a close this weekend after an 11-week run, which began on Sept 27, at the new Sun Dance Theatre in Silom. The festival showcases two original plays, two contemporary dances and two solo performances by established and emerging artists — an admirable achievement. Our only complaint was the absence in representation of lesbians and transsexuals. But if such a festival continues, it is likely that more artists showcasing works about other sexual identities will emerge.
