Public needs say on EEC project

News, Editorial, Published on 23/04/2017

» Viewed from an economic perspective, the Prayut Chan-o-cha government's move to extend the land lease period for foreign investors to areas designated for the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) appears to be a step in the right direction. Under the plan, eligible foreign investors are entitled to 50-year leases for residential development and 99-year leases for some of the commercial/industrial areas in the EEC zone. The plan, which is also known as the next phase of the Eastern Seaboard project, covers Chon Buri, Rayong and Chachoengsao.

Authorities have ordered food vendors off the pavements of three popular gathering areas between Sukhumvit sois 55 and 71. The world's No.1 Street Food City is about to become the Bangkok deserted sidewalk centre.

The doomed bus carried some 50 high school students and teachers from the northeastern province of Khon Kaen who were on a study trip to a royal development study centre in Tha Mai district of Chanthaburi. The trip was a reward for the students after completing their final exams.

» The first specific details of the programme to replace vans with micro buses for inter-city and inter-provincial passengers are now known. The Central Land Transport Control Board, under the supervision of Deputy Minister of Transport Pichit Akarathit, aims to have 55 buses on the roads by July 1. The pilot project will provide useful information. However, this optimistic report leaves out the single most important point.

Vans not worst killer

» After yet another failed government effort to bring down holiday road fatalities, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha talked tough. He said he intends to bring his Section 44 powers to bear, even though harsh road traffic enforcement has so far flunked the test.
