LIFE

A southern pearl with personality

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 31/03/2017

» Forget the usual beach huts and bland hotel buildings you've seen on your previous visits to Phuket. Instead, imagine an eye-popping destination set on a lush and tranquil beachfront where the sand stretches for miles and the sea is made up of 20 different shades of blue. Welcome to The Slate.

Let's get Baked

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 03/02/2017

» Open the doors to this dainty bakery and cafe on Soi 33 and you'll be immediately greeted by the smell of baked goodies and a very welcoming reception from co-owners Ning and Tong. These two affable ladies have taken over the spot that used to be 'Fat Beagle' -- which was also a bakery -- and decked it out in a homey yet modern style that's seriously inviting. If you ever find yourself in the area, it's a real must to drop in for a slice of cake.

Flip the health switch

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 27/01/2017

» The new year brings about so many idealistic goals and changes -- and from our own past experiences, let's just say that it's fairly likely that not all will be achieved by February. So we figured, instead of completely cutting out sugar or carbs from your diet, how about making a few healthy swapsies instead.

LIFE

Sugar, ice and everything nice

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 01/04/2016

» Good news, people. The National Research Department of All Delicious Things That Are Apparently Bad For You has made a new scientific discovery: low-calorie diets are actually bad for you. It is, in fact, better to consume fatty, sugary, carb-loaded foods, such as doughnuts, ice cream cake and chocolate frappes. Y'know, like how the Neanderthals were doing it for thousands of years before the vegans took over the world with their quinoa and chia seeds?

LIFE

A league of its own

» Dining at a Robuchon comes with expectations of being blown away, despite knowing that chef Joel Robuchon himself, who has 25 Michelin stars to his name, probably isn't in the kitchen prepping the emulsion for your starter. Guru avoided making a trip to the restaurant amid all the hype during its first few months of operation. After all, we wanted to see the true colours of L'Atelier, when the big boss wasn't poking around and pressuring the sous chefs. Stepping inside, you almost forget what country you're in. The restaurant is decked out in modern furnishings of leather, steel and marble, a coherent red and black colour scheme, a few (real) Warhols and a stunning long, wooden counter — no doubt the best place to fully appreciate your dining experience (and Robuchon's open kitchen).

Lang Suan's saucy secret

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 22/05/2015

» Nestled in Lang Suan sits a bistro with a knack for steak frites. Mind you, this isn't the type of steak and fries you'll find at any old gastropub. With 75 years worth of history behind its legendary Cafe de Paris sauce, Le Boeuf's focus is on serving up the finest entrecote steak in Thailand. The bistro makes full use of its glass facade, decorating it with dainty details such as gold railings and retro lamps. The maroon tablecloths and tight seating is reminiscent of a Parisian cafe. Diners include expats and locals with a craving for the same dish they've tried in Paris and London.

LIFE

Simple sophistication

» Deep dish, thin and crispy, folded, oozing with cheese — so many options and so many pizzerias to choose from. Yet, everyone has their favourite — a sacred place if you will. And god forbid if somebody else comes along and tells you that their go-to place is better. Countless verbal wars have been sparked by this topic, much like the endless discussion of best burger and noodle bowl. We commend Sfizio's valour for being the brave new Italian kid on the block who, for once, isn't interested in brick walls, wood-fired ovens, candles and opera singers. Instead, they opted for a modern look with a laid-back atmosphere. The cosy 22-seater restaurant feels like a friend's house (if you have an impressive Italian chef as your friend, that is) and serves up authentic Italian salads, pizza, pasta and desserts. Slightly hidden from the bustling street of Asok, the diners here are office workers, expats who reside in the area and returning customers who can't get enough of Sfizio.

LIFE

Modern comfort

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 28/11/2014

» From what used to be the grim, forgettable wine bar of Wine Me Up, the owners recently made the right choice to scrap the old idea and replace it with a bright and airy loft instead. Like its name, it serves up a good selection of Western food with a twist. With an emphasis on using fresh local ingredients and making everything in-house, diners can expect to taste sophisticated flavours in a casual atmosphere without being judged for wearing ripped jeans and flip-flops. Perching on the third floor of the popular SeenSpace area, the restaurant seems to be gaining the same brunch-loving crowd seen at Roast, expats and Thong Lorites who prefer their eggs organic and their juice hand-pressed.

Souper bowl

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 03/10/2014

» The combination of thick, warm, aromatic broth with slippery noodles puts ramen on the top of any foodie's list. But with countless venues offering ramen, everybody seems to already have their go-to place, whether it be the infamous Bankara Ramen on Sukhumvit Soi 39 or the one for the masses, Hachiban Ramen. Although set inside a glitzy mall, Ippudo's prices are very reasonable (especially compared to some of the restaurants on the fifth floor that are likely to leave a hole in your pocket). Opting for a casual and fun vibe, the decor is simple and modern, with an open kitchen where you can watch the ramen masters cook up a storm, exchange loud greetings and interact with customers. Ippudo has more than 120 branches across the world, but the quality and standard of service here makes you forget that you're dining in a chain restaurant.
