It's not often people can dance to molam and luk thung at Cheonggye Plaza, or eating som tam while lounging leisurely by Cheonggyecheon Stream. But the two-day event recently held in South Korea proved a delight for Thais as well as local Koreans and other foreigners.

Monks of a different gender

» On one side, male monks, or bhikkhu, file towards Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall to pay respect to King Bhumibol Adulyadej's royal urn. On the other, a group of 72 bhikkhunis, female monks, and novices were barred from going any further. They weren't allowed to go inside and pay respect to the late king -- at least not through the monk's gate, and not in their saffron robes.

» At the swift flick of the baton, the sound of vibrating brass, woodwind instruments and percussion rose and shook audiences with the rhythmic vivacity of marching music. The 37 hand-picked musicians dressed in their separate uniforms -- red for the Royal Thai Army Military Band, dark blue for the Royal Thai Navy Band and maroon for the Royal Thai Police Band -- performed under the banner of the Siam Symphonic Band in Germany earlier this month.
