Cool finds in Chiang Mai

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 11/11/2016

» We're not just about the "new". We also dig the cool, the fun, the funky and all things slightly hidden from plain sight. So we did a little detour, stepping into one or two "just-opened" venues and we also honed in on some less-discovered (but totally awesome) places. We tried, we tested and we even got a bit lost trying to find some of these hidden gems. So without further ado, dear readers, here are our top Chiang Mai picks for this year's winter season.

Dim sum central

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 25/03/2016

» It's no surprise that any restaurant with the "Chef Man" name tag will most likely have you waiting in a queue. The recently opened Man Kitchen at CentralWorld is no different. It is, however, breaking new grounds by introducing a dim sum buffet with all the trimmings at a very affordable price of B599++ per person.

Back to the future

» "Lying on the ground" is the literal meaning of the restaurant's name, a reference to the traditional way hawkers and street traders display and sell their goods. It's clear that Thai food culture continues to inspire Thitid "Ton" Tassanakajohn, the talented chef and restauranteur behind successful eateries Le Du, Baan and Taper. He can now add Baa Ga Din to that list, having found a gastronomical sweet spot that not only delights with a fine-dining level of culinary creativity while homing in on familiar nuances of the food we hold dear to our hearts (and stomachs).

Flavours to live by

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 09/10/2015

» They say the kitchen is the heart of the home, and who can argue with that statement when you're living in a country like Thailand? We're a food-obsessed breed, submerged in a culture that asks "Have you eaten?" instead of "How are you?", and where asking for seconds can only result in favouritism from the cook or the host of dinner party. Baan is the latest addition to Thitid Tassanakajohn's (better known as Chef Ton) growing portfolio of successful restaurants, which also includes Le Du and Taper. Baan's unfussed name was chosen to reflect the restaurant's concept of family recipes we've grown up with and love, with classic flavours that take us back to our grandparent's dining table. The decor is simple yet comforting -- marble and a monotone colour scheme are persistent throughout the cosy restaurant, with additions of warm tones from wood panels. Lunchtime here offers a quieter and more casual dining experience, whereas dinner time is where Baan revs up the pace with a bustling yet sophisticated ambience.

Pick up a healthy habit

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 04/09/2015

» I like to think that I lead a relatively healthy lifestyle. I drag myself to the gym at least five days a week and even try to avoid carbs for dinner -- big emphasis on "try".

LIFE

Ebit of everything

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 24/04/2015

» Moving away from sushi central (aka Thong Lor), this little Japanese place is injecting new energy into a dingy, once-popular community mall in Ekamai. Small, cosy and unfussed, Ebisu Sushi's bare walls and simple table settings reflect the owner's belief in showcasing quality food over fluff. The best view in the house is right in front of the counters, where you can watch sushi masters carefully preparing your dish, as well as take a peek at the fresh seafood on offer. The staff are well-trained, hospitable and can recommend dishes according to what fish are in season. Diners include young and hip locals, expats and Japanese families.

Mouth-watering Mediterranean

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 13/03/2015

» Mediterranean food often causes Bangkokians to rub their ears and raise their eyebrows in total confusion. Like any other cuisine, understanding its geographical origin is key, and several countries — Greece, Spain, Turkey, Italy, France — have coastlines along the Mediterranean Sea. With an increasing number of restaurants in Bangkok willing to venture beyond steaks and pizzas, our palates are beginning to expand, meaning there's no time like the present for a Mediterranean restaurant like Garibaldis to open in the heart of the city. With a spacious indoor and outdoor dining area, an open kitchen and a huge bar, the venue is perfect for a casual lunch. As night falls, the place buzzes with good vibes and funky jams. Who knows, you just might feel obligated to do a little salsa dancing (under the table with your feet). Free parking is provided — a huge bonus for anyone dreading the short stroll from Asok BTS station.

Find & dine

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 07/11/2014

» If there’s anything Bangkokians know a lot about, it’s shopping and eating. Now, there are places where you can actually do both (and no, we’re not talking about glitzy malls). We’ve rounded up mixed-use places where you can go to snack, and if you feel like it, browse and snap up cool finds — whether it be a designer dress, a vintage armchair or even a hipster bicycle.

A Parisian affair

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 10/10/2014

» If you've seen the movie Hugo, there's really not much need to explain the concept and ideas behind the restaurant. But for those who haven't watched the touching adventure drama set in the 1930s about an orphaned boy who lives behind the walls of a train station in Paris, listen up. Upon entering, guests are greeted with the uplifting sound of jazz music and dim lighting that accentuates the careful detailing of the restaurant's industrial decor. The casual, funky vibe and sound of bartenders shaking away their fancy cocktail concoctions add to the restaurant's eclectic charm. You can almost feel the cool Parisian breeze if you sit in the right spot with the air-con blowing in your face and forget that you're in Ekamai for a little while.
