The high costs of new US tariffs on Chinese EVs

Published on 25/05/2024

» US President Joe Biden’s administration has just announced 100% tariffs on electric vehicles (EVs) manufactured in China, prompting Donald Trump to promise a 200% tariff on Chinese cars made in Mexico if he is elected in November. Neither policy would have notable effects on the US car market because imports of Chinese EVs are minuscule, owing to past tariffs and the anti-Chinese sentiment that has gripped the country in recent years. Nonetheless, the announcement is significant for three reasons.

Elon Musk's X misses the spot in several ways

News, Published on 27/07/2023

» I suppose you could say changing the Twitter bird logo to an "X" makes complete sense. As the recognised icon for "make it go away", X just about sums up the achievements of Elon Musk's social network so far.

Blasts from the past with Thai film posters

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 08/07/2022

» Thai posters of Hollywood films have rightfully gained something of a cult following (movie pun intended). They are an art form in their own right since Thai artists took the liberty of creating local versions of famous Hollywood films and reimagined them in a new light by hand, often adding key moments from the plot almost to the point of revealing spoilers as opposed to the subtle approach of their originals, which depicted just enough to pique your curiosity.

New tactics to help migrant workers

Oped, Published on 28/07/2021

» It is now clear that this pandemic has hit vulnerable populations the hardest. Despite being one of the most vulnerable groups in society, migrant workers, including their family members, have been left with little care from the government. Despite helping the Thai economy for so long, there is no clear policy and little assistance to support migrant workers during this pandemic. This has to change if we seriously want to curb this crisis.

Lost in Translation

» At the risk of sounding nostalgic, I enjoy Googling things from decades gone by (exhibit A: Thai vintage ads in my past editor's notes). The Thai language version of famous Hollywood movie posters is another blast from the past I think is highly underrated, especially if you're a language nerd/film buff. Back then movie posters had to be recreated by Thai artists, who hand-painted them, along with creative copywriters, who came up with catchy titles and taglines in Thai.

A 'culture of silence' at work is not OK

» Every year on March 8, we celebrate International Women's Day to recognise the progress we have made in women's social, economic and political advancement. And every year, we still hear about heart-rending incidents that make us realise that we still have a long way to go towards a safer world for women and girls.
