» "Cinema is an invention without a future," said Louis Lumiere who, along with his brother Auguste, invented the Cinematographe in 1895. From its birth, cinema was convinced of its own death. From the very beginning, cinema predicted its own eventual demise. And that was before the two world wars, the advent of home video, laser disc, DVDs, Blu-rays, terrorism, mass shootings, Netflix, and now the coronavirus, the latest scourge that has sealed shut cinema houses around the world.

» An illegal Filipino migrant in Hokkaido, a Japanese grandfather in Penang, a UN official reflecting on the romantic past in Phnom Penh. The three short films in the omnibus Asian Three-Fold Mirror: Reflections narrate the criss-crossing of destiny between Asian people -- or particularly in this case between Japanese and Southeast Asians. The Reflections project has been commissioned by the Japan Foundation and Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) as a means to show the mutual relationships, present or forgotten, among the Asian countries.
Ain't no 'one nationality' movie

» Cataloging movies by their nationalities is convenient, though it's getting less practical and less relevant, in this age of internationalism and cross-border influences. We have a shining case in point this week: P Chai My Hero, or How to Win at Checkers (Every Time), looks, speaks, and feels Thai, though its genealogy is truly international. The film is based on two short stories by US-based Thai writer, Rattawut Lapcharoensap and directed by Korean-American Josh Kim, who moved to Thailand two years ago and successfully mounted this independent production.
