Good grapes and great food

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 10/03/2017

» The setting: Dimly-lit Riedel exudes the oaked feels of a swanky cellar, with one side lined with state-of-the-art wine dispensing and preservation systems that store a carefully curated and rotating selection of Riedel's 250 labels. Originally a wine glass company dating back to 1756, Riedel's known for producing those super elegant handmade glasses that complement and unleash the magic encapsulated in its bottles. Stepping into Riedel is thus like stepping into a classy sipping experiment that you end up carrying out on yourself, or with others. "Which bottle should I choose?" "Which glass-shape complements this bottle best?" "What is it about this particular shape of glass that brings out the earthy characteristics of bottle X?" "Which one should follow?" "Which one goes well with such-and-such-a-dish?" "How many sips do I need before Y happens..." You thus become your own master of the grape, a makeshift connoisseur for an evening. Of course, you're guided by sommeliers who know what they're doing, so you know who to blame if it all goes heads up.

For regal palates

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 03/02/2017

» The setting: There's a sacred ruby of a restaurant tucked away in the deep depths of Sukhumvit Soi 13, officially housed within the Radisson Suites but, on approach, it looks grand enough to be a stand-alone. A royal blue awning, pressed with the golden crest of Punjab Grill's internationally recognised lion covers the arched wooden doors. When you step through, a world of class and elegance cascades over you; the interior exudes a warm and contemporary atmosphere that somehow mixes in a "British India" colonial feel; warm wooden floors, red tints, high ceilings, long golden curtains and of course, a Chesterfield sofa form parts of the magnificent whole. You won't feel cooped up in here, that's for sure. There's an open kitchen featuring three authentic copper and clay tandoor ovens.

Let's piazza and chill

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 27/05/2016

» The sister of Antonio's Italian restaurant has finally been born. Her name is La Piazza and she is a gorgeous establishment located in the heart of Sukhumvit 24. It'll be hard to not turn your head when you drive past her. And, she is what Bangkok has been in dire need of for so long.

This Lady Brett is beaming

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 01/04/2016

» Serenely tucked away above road level at 72 Courtyard is the new instalment of Lady Brett, the mighty Thong Lor rendition. Named after the character of Lady Brett Ashley, the twice-divorced Englishwoman who had numerous love affairs in Ernest Hemingway's 1926 novel The Sun Also Rises, this new joint certainly makes you feel like you're stepping into a different era. Perhaps a 1920s Parisian gentleman's cozy quarters or even the living room of a country manor, if you will.
