Lost souls

Both were colossal figures in the development of r'n'b and soul music and both crossed over to international fame and, late though it came for James, success.

Food ville

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 27/01/2012

» I'm skipping through a neighbourhood of quaint houses and cute cottages. A windmill stands tall against the clear blue sky and a water mill turns at a sleep-inducing rate. I wish I had brought my hammock to string between two trees and sleep away the lazy afternoon. My dog is chasing butterflies and if you listen closely you can hear the sound of crickets.

A day with VRZO

Guru, Published on 27/01/2012

» Have you ever wondered how many people would choose "bananas and a muscular man" over "milk and a pretty girl" if they were the sole castaway on an island? Do you want to know how many girls out there would allow their boyfriends to take pictures of them naked? How many guys prefer beautiful dumb girls over intelligent homely ones? How many ladyboys would try to win over a man she liked?

Raiders of the archives

Life, Published on 27/01/2012

» A rich trove of archival treasures, footage collages, rare moving image intrigues and post-post-avant-gardism experiments is ready for an onslaught beginning tomorrow at the 6th Bangkok Experimental Film Festival (BEFF 6). Under the theme "Raiding the Archives", BEFF 6 continues the spirit (bordering on cinematic spiritualism) of experimental cinema as a form of cultural and artistic investigation, this time with the emphasis on the relationship between moving images and our perception and interpretation of history.

Daring to speak its name

Life, Yanapon Musiket, Published on 26/01/2012

» Shortly after we embraced the arrival of 2012 there was good tidings for the LGBT community when several local newspapers broke the story of two gay men from the South who found each other through Facebook and went on to solemnise their relationship by hosting a traditional wedding, which was attended by both sets of parents. Since same-sex marriage is not legal in Thailand, all the guys gained from the ceremony was a happy memory and recognition of the union by their nearest and dearest.

Parallel ambitions

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 25/01/2012

» We wish them the best of luck, and we pray Hua Hin International Film Festival won't turn out to be a lemon. A month ago hardly anybody had heard about this brand-new event, and now those who've heard about it are wondering if they'll take the trouble of making a trip down to the seaside town to watch the films. Our advise is, if the sky is blue and you have nothing else to do (and if you want to forsake the Bangkok Experimental Film Festival that will also happen this weekend) just go for the fun of it. Worst case, you can always decamp to the beach, or one of the seafood joints in Khao Takieb.

Bela in Bangkok

Life, Published on 24/01/2012

» Like a cool uncle, Hungarian auteur Bela Tarr breezed into Bangkok this weekend without much fanfare and managed to blow the audience away with his film The Turin Horse. Tarr is one of the world's most visionary film-makers, a great formalist who sculpted his hypnotic cinema through long takes and lateral tracking. In town to accept the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 9th World Film Festival (in addition to so many Lifetime trophies he has received in the past year) the director, a soft-spoken titan of European cinema, also answered questions after the screening of The Turin Horse on Sunday at Esplanade Cineplex.
