Actual goals

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 20/01/2017

» Resolutions, smesolutions, am I right? Do you find yourself setting them superficially year after year, only to carry them on to the next one? Or not even bother anymore? At the same time, you know goals are essential to achievements. So maybe what we all need is to have a real and open exchange about them.

When Thai people gather

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 04/11/2016

» This country may have a reputation for indifference, but there have been a few instances in recent memory which we can also be a population of the least chill. Because when it comes to matters of the heart -- our hearts -- we'll waste no time getting to the epicentre of what matters most, demonstrating this incredible and insuppressible passion. This week, we'd like to remember, through photographs, a few major occasions in which our love for something brought us together, physically, in one space.

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 19/08/2016

» In passing, you may mistake Street Mad for just another generic burger stand trying to emulate Murican fast food as authentically as possible. However, a good look at the menu and a little bit of insider knowledge will reveal this street burger brand's charm and sophistication.

Spirited away

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 22/07/2016

» Meet Minway Chi. Born and raised in New York, he has dabbled in pretty much every aspect of nightlife as a DJ, lighting designer, bartender and now a spirits importer. Having been settled in Bangkok for the last 12 years, Minway now runs Bootleggers Trading Co., a company actively moving forward Bangkok's cocktail culture. Guru visited the "Consulting Boozologist" — no really, that's what it says on his card — at Raw Bar on a regular night to watch him shake and talk about Bootleggers, change and a smidge of his upbringing.

Beef & Shake Doesn't Miss a Beat

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 24/06/2016

» The first time I visited Beef & Shake, unannounced, I was around Chong Nonsi, hungry and also desperate for a place to briefly anchor ship to put the finishing touches on a story I was supposed to submit a day earlier. Knowing my affinity for mushroom burgers, my entourage suggested a new burger place near the BTS that had, not just one, but several options of fungi burgers.

It's fry time

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 29/04/2016

» Have you ever -- while sober and with your conscience intact -- had the sudden craving for fries and only fries but are slightly peeved about going to a restaurant for something that boils down to a cheap two-minute appeasement of impulse? Perhaps, it is with this very struggle in mind that the latest global snack franchise, Potato Corner, comes to our city.

Native globish

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 08/04/2016

» Considering the number of micro-schools in Thailand for teaching English, and yet our notoriously low proficiency in the language, there is clearly a disconnect between what's on offer and what we need. An online-based start-up by the name of Globish Academia, however, is staunchly determined to break the stalemate. Having recently triumphed on the television show Tiger Wings, receiving a B3-million kickstart from Tan Passakornnatee of Ichitan and Paiboon Damrongchaitham of GMM Grammy, Globish Academia is an undeniable rising star in the tutoring school industry, because of an approach traditional educators may find unorthodox. We catch up with one of the founders, 25-year-old "Juice" Chuencheewan Wongsaeree, to talk about the new kind of English that could finally make a difference for this nation.

Easy streets

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 31/07/2015

» Publications are always so keen on naming the top-whatever cities to live in or visit. We don't normally bother with such trivial and arbitrary lists, but we're tired of these articles completely overlooking the benefits of Bangkok. When talking about our fair city, people often (and unfairly) think of only two things -- traffic and the blasphemous industry of which we don't speak because we're a Buddhist country so we pretend it doesn't exist. That has to end. This week, we give you 10 reasons why living in Bangkok should be everyone's dream.

One popular pooch

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 24/07/2015

» Thousands of followers on Instagram is not a big deal for celebrities. But for a dog? Now that's quite phenomenal. Nina Choakpichitchai, 22, has been a dog lover all her life, and the age of social media has led to the unprecedented and unintentional fame of her oversized toy poodle, Jaja. The pooch's Instagram account, BabyBearBkk, with 17,000 followers to date, regularly features photos and videos that prove there's more to Jaja than her fluffy red coat. Guru sits down with Nina to find out exactly how the pup became so popular.
